In another large late-stage play from a public-markets investor, Wellington Management has put $80 million into Powa Technologies Group PLC., Venture Capital Dispatch has learned.Wellington, which last year invested $76 million in the mobile payments and e-commerce company, valued Powa around $2.7 billion in the fresh round.

“It’s a huge injection of capital and vote of confidence,” said Powa founder and Chief Executive Dan Wagner, who confirmed the round. “We want to become the ubiquitous platform for mobile commerce and payments.” 

Mr. Wagner says he isn’t concerned about the competition. He believes that his “merchants-first’ strategy will enable him to trump other players.

“If you get the engagement with the merchants, then consumers will follow,” Mr. Wagner said. “We’re about selling, we’re not about payments.”

IBM inventors have patented a method for enhancing the use of analytics in assessing and directing data in a cloud computing environment, effectively examining data from a variety of sources to avoid performance inefficiencies and processing delays.

This patented technique performs real-time analysis on data -- such as online transactions, readings from sensors, financial quotes, video streams, etc. -- as it is generated. It quickly determines how each piece of data will be processed, by identifying patterns in the data values that have correlated with slower processing in the past, to avoid situations where certain data values might delay the processing of all the data.

The cloud computing system then automatically channels each piece of data – also known as a tuple – down the right analysis path to ensure timely, efficient analysis. In essence, the invention creates an “express lane” for “normal” tuples ensuring that they are analyzed promptly, while tuples with values known to be problematic or that are very time consuming to analyze are sent down other analysis paths.
