Peter Vogel's insight:

This is no small task. Here, 15 of the 1232 dipole assemblies are being replaced for "wear-and-tear" during the four years or so that they have been in use. Each weighs some 35 tonnes and has to be lowered around 100 metres.

TRIUMF director heads for greener pastures and Fermilab

TRIUMF director heads for greener pastures and Fermilab | Particle Physics | Scoop.it
Next week when Nigel Lockyer wakes up and looks out the window of his new farmhouse, there’s a chance he’ll see some of the 100-head of bison roaming the 6,800-acre site. But Lockyer didn’t trade in his Vancouver condo to become a farmer.
Peter Vogel's insight:

After five years at the helm of TRIUMF, Nigel Lockyer has just two days left at Canada's primary nuclear science facility and particle accelerator. During his time at TRIUMF he has raised the institution to world-class standing. Now, Fermilab hopes he can do the same for that organization. These moves are part of the jockeying going on as countries compete to become home to the next big-thing in particle physics, likely a linear particle accelerator of some sorts. Lockyer speaks of a 100 km accelerator running from Illinois into South Dakota.

What is at the bottom of a black hole? What is the universe made of? Why is there stuff? Careful. These questions may set your head spinning, much like that accretion disk you see in the image above.
