Measure(s) of Man: Architects' Data Add-on | thomascarpentier.com | Participatory & collaborative design | Diseño participativo y colaborativo | Scoop.it

During architectural conception, architects use some references books. These studies, rules dictate us how architecture should be designed in term of dimensions, schemes, uses, … therefore creating a standard. This books are mostly used by architects without them questioning the thinking behind, the global picture created.

One of this reference book is Architects’ Data by Ernst Neufert. This architects’ Biblle, written during Bauhaus (1936), has been constantly improved, but still carries within it the desire of universality dreamed by modernism. Apply strictly the book’s rules and you will produce a universal house for a perfect family.

But universal architecture showed its limits and perfect characters and bodies don’t exist outside of a model. And why should they exist? Once again to validate the existence of this model, as a goal to reach.

I tried to create my own version of the book, one that tries to better reflect the diversity in humanity and what the richness could produce when designing for them.

The Violence of Algorithms: Why Big Data Is Only as Smart as Those Who Generate It

With the rise of big data, the state is pushing the bounds of the social contract. Reinventing urban democracy in Barcelona

Reinventing urban democracy in Barcelona | Participatory & collaborative design | Diseño participativo y colaborativo | Scoop.it

Barcelona's citizens are setting aside the historical baggage of the nineteenth and twentieth century struggles of industrial workers movements, inventing a newly resonant language of rights and democracy

Tomás Sánchez Criado's insight:

"[…] The platform came about through a coming together of social movements, civil society organisations and community groups, many of whom forged close relations during the alter-globalisation movement of the early 2000s and more recently as part of the indignados movement. A strong current of citizen participation was thus evident from the outset, and this has only intensified with neighbourhood meetings, an open process for selecting candidates, and the use of online tools for greater transparency and participation."

Studio Studies: Operations, Topologies & Displacements | Farías & Wilkie (Eds.)

Studio Studies: Operations, Topologies & Displacements | Farías & Wilkie (Eds.) | Participatory & collaborative design | Diseño participativo y colaborativo | Scoop.it

Consider the vast array of things around you, from the building you are in, the lights illuminating the interior, the computational devices mediating your life, the music in the background, even the crockery, furniture and glassware you are in the presence of. Common to all these objects is that their concrete, visual and technological forms were invariably conceived, modelled, finished and tested in sites characterised as studios. Remarkably, the studio remains a peculiar lacuna in our understanding of how cultural artefacts are brought into being and how ‘creativity’ operates as a located practice.

Studio Studies is an agenda setting volume that presents a set of empirical case studies that explore and examine the studio as a key setting for aesthetic and material production. As such, Studio Studies responds to three contemporary concerns in social and cultural thought: first, how to account for the situated nature of creative and cultural production; second, the challenge of reimagining creativity as a socio-materially distributed practice rather than the cognitive privilege of the individual; and finally, to unravel the parallels, contrasts and interconnections between studios and other sites of cultural-aesthetic and technoscientific production, notably laboratories. By enquiring into the operations, topologies and displacements that shape and format studios, this volume aims to demarcate a novel and important object of analysis for empirical social and cultural research as well to develop new conceptual repertoires to unpack the multiple ways studio processes shape our everyday lives.

Beautiful Users: Designing for People by Ellen Lupton

Beautiful Users: Designing for People by Ellen Lupton | Participatory & collaborative design | Diseño participativo y colaborativo | Scoop.it

In the mid-twentieth century, Henry Dreyfuss, widely considered the father of industrial design, pioneered a user-centered approach to design that focuses on studying people's behaviors and attitudes as a key first step in developing successful products. In the intervening years, user-centered design has expanded to undertake the needs of differently abled users and global populations as well as the design of complex systems and services.Beautiful Users explores the changing relationship between designers and users and considers a range of design methodologies and practices, from user research to hacking, open source, and the maker culture.

Accompanies the fall 2014 exhibition that reopens the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, following a three-year renovationDesigns featured range from classics such as Henry Dreyfuss's telephone to cutting-edge inventions such as Yves Behar's pill dispenser, the Nest thermostat, Robohand (3D-printed prosthetics), off-road wheelchairs, and Thimas Carpentier's Measure(s) of a Man projectIncludes a critical glossary of terms, from consumer and prosumer to human factors and experience design

Beautiful Users is edited and designed by Ellen Lupton, senior curator of contemporary design at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and the bestselling author of numerous PAPress books, including Thinking with Type, Type on Screen, and Graphic Design Thinking.

KAIROS video archive project

KAIROS video archive project | Participatory & collaborative design | Diseño participativo y colaborativo | Scoop.it

First we take Barcelona...

First we take Barcelona... | Participatory & collaborative design | Diseño participativo y colaborativo | Scoop.it

This spring, Barcelona has become, once again, the battleground for the radical soul of Europe.

Tomás Sánchez Criado's insight:

"[…] Taking back a city also means putting decision-making in the hands of ordinary people. This doesn't just mean letting citizens vote on proposals made from above, it also means giving them the power to launch new initiatives themselves. For us, a 'Smart City' is one that harnesses the collective intelligence of the people who live in it. We drew up our election manifesto in an open, participatory way. Over 5000 people took part in its development, resulting in a programme that focuses on guaranteeing basic rights, making the city more liveable, and democratizing public institutions. It's a living document, the start of a conversation with citizens that will continue over the next four years should we win the election."
