The French Still Flock to Bookstores | Paris Je T'aime | Scoop.it

As independent bookstores crash and burn in the United States and Britain, the book market in France is doing just fine. France boasts 2,500 bookstores, and for every neighborhood bookstore that closes, another seems to open. From 2003 to 2011 book sales in France increased by 6.5 percent.

Paris tests 40 urban innovations directly on public

Paris tests 40 urban innovations directly on public | Paris Je T'aime | Scoop.it

The project, entitled “Mobilier Urbain Intelligent,” or “Intelligent Urban Installations,” coordinated between the Mayor’s Office and the Paris Region Lab, began in late 2010 by calling upon inventors and design agencies to submit proposals. After extensive review of 48 projects, the city chose 40 ideas to implement, putting the prototypes in place during 2012. This is the first time that the public will be able to experience these innovations firsthand with the possibility to evaluate and comment on each one online.

France opens Europe’s largest contemporary art center, dust and all

The unfinished look, so said the center’s President Jean de Loisy, is deadly intentional.

“The landscape here is different from any other center in the world,” de Loisy told The Associated Press. “Nothing is perfectly clean, nothing is perfectly painted on purpose. It is so important in art not to control everything. It’s all in favor of creativity.”

Why an MRI costs $1,080 in America and $280 in France

Why an MRI costs $1,080 in America and $280 in France | Paris Je T'aime | Scoop.it

There is a simple reason health care in the United States costs more than it does anywhere else: The prices are higher.

That may sound obvious. But it is, in fact, key to understanding one of the most pressing problems facing our economy.

“Her name is Leyin. I am Julien. For 6 years we were together until she left me, 7 weeks ago. If you will allow me, I will share this story of love and passion with you, a piece a day, for as long as my faith keeps up or until she comes back to this line 12, which she takes regularly. My wish? To touch her, move her and at the same time, bring some beauty to this world of the Paris metro.“

“Do you have plants in your home?” he asks impatiently. “Do you water them every day? Why do you water them? Because,” he goes on, “otherwise they’re ratty little dead things.” That’s why these forgotten cultural icons are important ... "If we restore an early 20th-century subway station, we don’t imagine Electricitè de France will ask us to transform 200,000 volts to 20,000. No, we just want to get as close as possible to a functioning state.”

Why Is Europe a Dirty Word?

Why Is Europe a Dirty Word? | Paris Je T'aime | Scoop.it

Europe gets some important things right. It has addressed energy issues and climate change far more seriously than America has. It now has more economic mobility than the United States, partly because of strong public education systems. America used to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world; now France and Britain are both ahead of us.

Back in 1960, French life expectancy was just a few months longer than in the United States, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. By 2009, the French were living almost three years longer than we were.

Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga may be known as one of history’s greatest couturiers, but he was also an avid collector of period pieces that gave him inspiration for his elaborate cocktail dresses and evening coats, including the 1967 black silk gazar “chou” wrap and an intricately beaded velvet Spanish-inspired evening ensemble from 1943.

10 French brands you’ll find on Pinterest | Paris Je T'aime | Scoop.it

Typically, French companies are not the first to jump onto a new social media trend or craze. Not that any of these more traditional, historic brands is averse to social media, but they’re definitely not your average early adopters. And with President Sarkozy not setting the best social media example, we were pleasantly surprised to find a few French brands on up-and-coming social marketing platform, Pinterest. Here’s a look at a few we discovered…and a few who are, well, missing in action.

As an american in Paris, do you agree with her vision ?
Angela Natividad's comment, March 7, 2012 6:27 AM
I'm not convinced French parents are superior but I do think we shouldn't renegotiate everything in our lives around them or give them a false sense of their own specialness. I also agree that Americans tend to treat their children too preciously. My parents were immigrants and I know that if I behaved badly in public I'd be smacked into the parallel universe neighbouring ours. o_O

Do you?
Guillaume Decugis's comment, August 28, 2012 12:36 AM
I just love this controversy. So much easier to understand differences now that everyone heard about the book.

Postnatal care in France: Vagina exercises and video games

Postnatal care in France: Vagina exercises and video games | Paris Je T'aime | Scoop.it

Shortly after my husband and I moved to Paris, I became pregnant, which was a relief, because I would get fat for a legitimate biological reason, not just because of all the pain au chocolat. When I gave birth to our daughter last November, my husband and I spent five government-sponsored days in the maternity ward at Clinique Leonardo Da Vinci, where we learned that French hospital meals come with a cheese course and that as part of my postpartum treatment I would be prescribed 10 to 20 sessions of la rééducation périnéale. This is a kind of physical therapy designed to retrain the muscles of the pelvic floor, including the vagina, and is one of the cornerstones of French postnatal care. Two months after our daughter was born, I summoned the courage to teach my vagina some new tricks.
