5 sleep tips for college students - Holy Kaw!

5 sleep tips for college students - Holy Kaw! | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it

Making sure to pack the laptop and flip-flops for the shower isn’t the only thing parents can give their children heading to college, and though advice may fall by the wayside as soon as the first set of mid-terms looms, at least you can say you tried.

Professor Colleen Carney of Ryerson University’s Sleep and Depression lab has five tips for college students concerning sleep that might sink in a little if you remind them every day until they leave and at least twenty times on the trip to campus. (A note in the laptop might not hurt either.)

Child Abuse or Discipline? Father Beats Son For Bad Behavior In School

"I support a little spanking here and there. But it should be done with your hand and not an object. You should be feeling the same pain that your child is feeling. I was spanked when I acted up as a child, and I feel that I am a high functioning member of society today for it. I know kids that were never spanked... but were put in "time-out". They were brats back then, and they are still brats now. If something doesn't go there way they complain instead of sucking it up like a normal adult."

Muslim doctor in Britain loses Sharia law fight over divorce settlement

Muslim doctor in Britain loses Sharia law fight over divorce settlement | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it

A Muslim hospital consultant has been ordered by a British court to pay his ex-wife’s maintenance, despite the man arguing that by Sharia (Islamic) law he should not have to.

Dr. Zaid al-Saffar was told by a judge that he must pay £60,000 ($94,249) to his former wife, academic Hanan al-Saffar and follow the “rule in this country,” according to a report by the Daily Mail on Wednesday.

In some Muslim societies there is often no expectation that ex-husbands pay maintenance to ex-wives, while others agree that maintenance has to be paid if the woman does not re-marry and has children.

Saffar, a consultant rheumatologist who is also the head of the Islamic Society in the resort town, was married for eight years, and the couple had two children. According to the report, their marriage was formalized following the Islamic tradition of Mahr, under which the groom pays a gift to his bride.

Justice Secretary, Jack Straw's Response On Baby P's Mum

These were terrible crimes, unspeakable almost beyond words. The whole country has been deeply affected by the case of Baby Peter.

"It will now be the role of the prison service to monitor these offenders within prison.
"The judge has been clear about the minimum terms they must serve and such decisions must be for the judiciary.

"Beyond that time they will only be released if the Parole Board decides after a rigorous safety assessment that it is safe to do so.
"If the Parole Board thinks they are not safe to release, they will remain in custody until such time as they are, whenever that may be.

The Government will do everything in its power to protect children.

“We introduced the law of familial homicide in 2004 – with a maximum jail term of 14 years – to make sure that where a child was killed, but the evidence is unclear who in the household was responsible, a prosecution may still be made.

The Government also introduced indeterminate sentences such as that received by Baby Peter's mother to ensure that the most serious dangerous offenders are kept in prison until they can be safely managed in the community.
All life and indeterminate sentence prisoners must serve a minimum punitive period of imprisonment (tariff) before they can be considered for release.

They will then only be released if the independent Parole Board is satisfied that their continued detention is no longer necessary to protect the public.

A large proportion of IPP prisoners, as well as life sentence prisoners, serve more than the minimum period of their tariff.

We have greatly toughened up the sentencing system, which is one reason why prisoners are serving longer sentences and there has been a record increase in the prison population.
"In any justice system, sentencing has to be a matter for the independent judiciary.”

Drink plenty of fluids. Since your nausea is caused by dehydration, make sure to drink lots of water and other fluids like juices or Gatorade throughout the day. Don't drink more than two cups of caffeinated coffee or tea. Although coffee and tea may alleviate certain symptoms of a hangover, the caffeine in these drinks will further dehydrate your body.

Tax refund from the IRS for adoptive families in 2012 | Washington Times Communities

Tax refund from the IRS for adoptive families in 2012 | Washington Times Communities | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it

NEW YORK, April 2, 2012 — Adoptive families can get a check for more than $13,000 from the IRS this year.

Adoptive parents can claim up to $13,360 for each child they have adopted in the past six years on their 2011 tax returns.  That’s a bit more --$190 to be exact— over last year.

Although the U.S. government has offered some form of adoption tax credit since 1997, it wasn’t until President Obama's Affordable Care Act of 2010 that the credit became fully refundable in the form of a check from the IRS. Previously, the credit was used to offset tax liability and could be extended forward each year.
