The Heroic Mothers Of Lost Children

The Heroic Mothers Of Lost Children | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it
The prevailing myth was that women had an unfair advantage in custody battles and that men were discriminated against. This was not true then, and it is not true today.Just as the Argentinean mothers of the Plaza de Mayo boldly demonstrated on behalf of their missing children, known as the "desaparecidos" (both young and adult children disappeared by a military junta), just so are American mothers crying out and publicly demonstrating about their lost children.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:

Ex-Judicial Marshal Accused Of Sex Trafficking Must Decide On Plea Deal

Ex-Judicial Marshal Accused Of Sex Trafficking Must Decide On Plea Deal | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it
Former Waterbury judicial marshal Michael A. Connelly, accused of promoting prostitution and human trafficking while posing as a law enforcement officer, must decide by Thursday whether to take a plea bargain that would send him to prison for one year.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:

If he agrees to the deal, the prosecutor in the case will have done something only one other prosecutor has done in Connecticut — win a conviction under the state's 10-year-old anti-human trafficking law, a law that has come under fire in recent weeks when questions about its lack of use were raised at the state Capitol.

‘Worst kind of custody dispute’ ends with $500,000 in lawyer fees after a 36-day trial | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it
When custody disputes turn into all-out wars, it's often kids that are caught in the crossfire. Fotolia
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:

It’s 2014 and Penny has spent the last two years in the “crossfire” of her parents’ “Cold War” of a divorce; “the worst kind of custody dispute,” according to a January ruling from Ontario Superior Court Justice Alex Pazaratz. After a 36-day trial — a length more common for a criminal hearing than a custody dispute — they’ve spent half a million dollars on lawyers.

Police say a woman whose body was found after a house fire in Hartlepool was murdered.

Police said Mrs Bell, who had been a foster parent to more than 50 children and would have turned 80 next month, died before the fire started.

"Whilst it is too early to say what the motive is or whether the suspect was known to Mrs Bell, I would remind anyone in the local area who may have an elderly or vulnerable relative or neighbour to check on them.

PRACTICE DIRECTION 12B – CHILD ARRANGEMENTS PROGRAMME

When does the Child Arrangements Programme Apply?

1.1

The Child Arrangements Programme (the ‘CAP’) applies where a dispute arises between separated parents and/or families about arrangements concerning children.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
1.2

The CAP is designed to assist families to reach safe and child-focused agreements for their child, where possible out of the court setting. If parents / families are unable to reach agreement, and a court application is made, the CAP encourages swift resolution of the dispute through the court.

1.3

It is well-recognised that negotiated agreements between adults generally enhance long-term co-operation, and are better for the child concerned. Therefore, separated parents and families are strongly encouraged to attempt to resolve their disputes concerning the child outside of the court system. This may also be quicker and cheaper.

Why Asian Adoptees Need to Give a Shit about #BlackLivesMatter

Why Asian Adoptees Need to Give a Shit about #BlackLivesMatter | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it

I don't remember the first time someone told me I was White. But I definitely remember the last. It was the summer of my junior year in college and I was a new student orientation leader. My university was diverse but mostly segregated, and this staff was about half White and half Black - plus me.

Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
Tensions became apparent early on: miscommunications, presumptions, an offensive skit impersonation. I remember feeling unsettled about how I was situated in all of this. After one of the meetings where things got heated, Sheri, one my Black colleagues, rolled her eyes at me and said, C’mon, Amy, you’re basically White.

I was pretty butt-hurt. With that one assertion, it felt like Sheri tried to erase all the times I was called Chink on the playground or was fetishized by horny White dudes. I wasn’t White. The world definitely doesn’t see me as White. But I wasn’t Black either. The violent history of anti-Blackness in the US was not something I felt like I could fully relate to.

Sheri said that to me ten years ago but it resonates with me more than ever. Police brutality and the devaluation of Black and Brown bodies is nothing new, but it grows increasingly clear that we are at a critical point right now, a new civil rights movement. And yet, anti-Blackness is a concept still largely unexplored by transracial Asian adoptees. From reading coded indignation about not wanting to play the race card like that group on adoptee forums, to hearing n*gger during a Korean culture camp skit this summer, I have generally witnessed silence from our adopted community in both live and online spaces as our Black brothers and sisters continue to fight for their lives to matter.

The short answer to this post’s title is: because it’s simply the right fucking thing to do.

Record conversations with doctors, minister tells patients
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
Health minister Edith Schippers is recommending people record conversations with their doctors to make sure they don’t forget what they have been told. The conversation should be recorded on a smart phone or similar device and used for personal information only, Schippers said. ‘Good care requires that doctors and patients agree about the treatment,’ Schippers said in a briefing to parliament. ‘And it is important that patients ask questions and doctors take the time to answer them.’ Doctors who don’t want to be recorded should then be required to provide the patient with written information.

International adoptions fall to lowest level since 1982

International adoptions fall to lowest level since 1982 | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it
Mother’s Day for an Oakmont family comes at a time when international adoption is becoming increasingly rare.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
Ms. Howard and her husband Jason have adopted three children and are advocates for international adoption. 20160504rldAdoption06-4 Jason and A.J. Howard adopted siblings Katia, 15, and Daniil, 12, from Lithuania and daughter London, 3, from China.

London Grace Howard whirls around her family’s Oakmont living room, her pink tutu bouncing as she zooms a toy stroller and shopping cart around their cozy home.

Today is the first Mother’s Day in the Howard home since 3-year-old London was adopted in September from an orphanage in China. And it comes at a time when international adoption — once an unremarkable occurrence — is becoming increasingly rare.

Two programs for prevention of juvenile delinquency will be piloted in Moldova | Child Protection Hub for South East Europe

Two programs for prevention of juvenile delinquency will be piloted in Moldova | Child Protection Hub for South East Europe | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it
A group of Moldovan professionals working in the Juveniles Justice area and representatives of Terre des hommes Moldova undertook a study visit to Romania between the 28th of March and the 2nd of April, 2016. The group of professionals from Moldova included 10 representatives of key actors in the juvenile justice field: Probation Office, General Police Inspectorate, Psycho-Pedagogical Service of the Ministry of Education, Penitentiary Department of the Ministry of Justice, the General Prosecutor’s Office and Terre des hommes.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
The 5-day study visit in Romania included, at the national level, meetings with similar authorities from Romania, but also with non-governmental organisations and authorities at local level. The main objectives of the visit were the familiarization with the Romanian best practices related to prevention of juvenile delinquency, its legislation and specific programs aiming at helping children in conflict with the law to adopt a lawful behaviour and social inclusion. The situation in Romania is evidently more evolved than in Moldova with regard to service delivery for children in conflict with the law or those at risk. Therefore, the delegation met with and learnt from the most relevant and advanced actors and service providers in this field. The group had one day of meetings in Bacau, two days in Bucharest and other two in Cluj-Napoca.

Ottoman Empire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ottoman Empire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ottoman Empire (; Ottoman Turkish: دَوْلَتِ عَلِيّهٔ عُثمَانِیّه‎, Devlet-i Aliyye-i Osmâniyye ; Modern Turkish: Osmanlı İmparatorluğu or Osmanlı Devleti ), also known as the Turkish Empire, Ottoman Turkey or Turkey, was an empire founded in 1299 by Oghuz Turks under Osman I in northwestern Anatolia.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, in particular at the height of its power under the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Empire was a multinational, multilingual empire controlling much of Southeast #Europe, Western Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and the Horn of #Africa.
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
With Constantinople as its capital and control of lands around the Mediterranean basin, the Ottoman Empire was at the centre of interactions between the Eastern and Western worlds for six centuries. Following a long period of military setbacks against European powers, the Ottoman Empire gradually declined into the late nineteenth century. The empire allied with Germany in the early 20th century, with the imperial ambition of recovering its lost territories, joining in World War I.

Has Rocco Ritchie Just Hit Out At Madonna On Instagram? | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it

A private account claiming to be Rocco Ritchie has sparked concern after a series of cryptic posts.

Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
As Madonna’s high-profile custody battle over her 15-year-old son Rocco continues, a new Instagram account has popped up claiming to be run by the teenager. The private account, which has been set up in the past week, has sparked confusion after its description read, ‘Son of a b**ch’.

A source close to Madonna told MailOnline: “If this is his new account then clearly comments like this show he’s in a delicate place and highlights the fact he needs to be in an equally supportive relationship with both parents.”

A year later, opening of adoption birth records in Ohio still solving mysteries

A year later, opening of adoption birth records in Ohio still solving mysteries | Parental Responsibility | Scoop.it
When the packet arrived in the mail, Allison Grove reassured herself — for the umpteenth time — that she had good reasons for wanting to tear into its contents. She wasn’t yearning for parental love. On that front, her mother and father had given her a lifetime. The Far North Side resident is married now with four kids of her own. “I wasn’t missing anything,” Grove said. “There was nothing lacking, other than my physical identity.”
Ngozi Angeline Godwell's insight:
A law that took effect a year ago this month has given Grove and thousands of other Ohio adoptees a path toward solving long-running mysteries about everything from eye color and ethnic heritage to the circumstances of their birth and risks of genetic disease.

The legislation finally unsealed the birth records of people whose adoptions were finalized in

Ohio between 1964 and 1996, allowing them to obtain copies of their original birth certificates. The Ohio Department of Health had issued 7,824 adoption files as of March 5 and continues to receive requests.

“There was a crush with the first wave of people getting their original birth certificates,” said Betsie Norris, executive director of

#Adoption Network Cleveland and an advocate who led the years-long fight for records access. “We almost couldn’t build support mechanisms fast enough.”

Armed with new information, many adoptees are searching for birth parents for the first time, while others, like Grove, have been able to resume efforts that once led to dead ends.
