The Lotus Building Grows from a Lake in Wujin, China | Parametric Design Efforts | Scoop.it

Growing from the artificial lake at the center of Wujin, China is a fantastic new structure – “The Lotus Building” from Australian architecture firm Studio 505. Considering its natural form, it’s only appropriate that The Lotus Building is designed with the importance of the environment in mind.

Studio 505 explains:

“The project has been designed to minimise energy usage- with over 2500 geothermal piles driven through the base of the artificial lake, The entire lake water mass and ground beneath is utilised to pre-cool (summer) and pre-warm (winter) the air conditioning systems for both the lotus and the two storey building beneath the lake. The project is also mixed mode and naturally ventilated and utilises evaporative cooling from the lake surface to drive a thermal chimney within the main flower pod.”

"In the Scripted Movement Series of drawings/paintings, I have begun to experiment with the use of industrial robotics. Typically used in the production of cars or other mass-produced items of contemporary culture, these robots are essentially larger, stronger, and more precise version of the human arm. Made up of a series of joints that mimic yet extend the movements of shoulder, elbow, and wrist, the robot has a wide range of highly control motion. The real value of these robots is that, like the human arm, their usefulness is completely determined by the tool that is placed in its hand. Although with industry these tools include welding torches, vacuum grippers, and saws, really any tool can be used."

Here are the most important beliefs of cybernetic totalism:

 

1) That cybernetic patterns of information provide the ultimate and best way to understand reality.


2) That people are no more than cybernetic patterns.


3) That subjective experience either doesn’t exist, or is unimportant because it is some sort of ambient or peripheral effect.


4) That what Darwin described in biology, or something like it, is in fact also the singular, superior description of all creativity and culture.


5) That qualitative as well as quantitative aspects of information systems will be accelerated by Moore’s Law.

 

And finally, the most dramatic:

6) That biology and physics will merge with computer science (becoming biotechnology and nanotechnology), resulting in life and the physical universe becoming mercurial; achieving the supposed nature of computer software. Furthermore, all of this will happen very soon! Since computers are improving so quickly, they will overwhelm all the other cybernetic processes, like people, and will fundamentally change the nature of what’s going on in the familiar neighborhood of Earth at some moment when a new “criticality”is achieved- maybe in about the year 2020. To be a human after that moment will be either impossible or something very different than we now can know.
