Addressing Fatigue Risk Management in the Workplace -

The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine’s Presidential Task Force on fatigue risk management published a guidance statement intended to assist in the design and implementation of a fatigue risk-management system (FRMS).
Donna Vandermaat's insight:

I believe that Fatigue is a major concern with Paramedics at the moment.  There are so many people that are affected by this, not only the Paramedics, but also their patients and hospital staff that they interact with.  Many paramedics are not getting enough sleep, are working on call after already working a 10 hour shift.  Especially rural officers who work 8 days straight and on call every night.  I believe that fatigue is a massive problem that needs to be addressed through risk management.    This article was very interesting to read, with some valid points and systems that could help paramedics of today.

Donna Vandermaat's insight:

This is Kate, and in her spare time she likes to work out.  Kate participates in many outdoor workouts.  She says that even though she is doing something she loves she needs to make sure that she looks after herself.  She has to make sure that she is aware of her environment, so she does not slip, fall or do any damage to herself.  Even though she has a trainer, she still needs to make sure that she is aware of potential hazards.

Donna Vandermaat's insight:

This is Morgan's work environment, she works as a runabout at the local pub.  On a daily she is confronted with OHS issues, that she needs to be aware of and if any found make sure management are aware.  Some of these hazards are: spills, glass breakages, fire, burns, long working hours, busy working areas, violent/alcohol customers, lifting injuries, not only to herself but to other staff and customers of the pub.   All fire exits and fire equipment are clearly marked and identified.  Morgan was given training when she first commenced work at the pub, and is always making sure all safety measurements are adhered to.

Health and Safety information for Ambulance officer and paramedic - Workplace Health and Safety Queensland

Donna Vandermaat's insight:

With workplace health and safety Queensland, there was a lot of information, worth reading, especially when this is the field I want to work under!  There was an interesting read on how to manage the risks, which shared the Risk Management code of practice 2007.   I also found the key health and safety tips for ambulance officers and paramedics interesting.

Nita and her playground

Nita and her playground | Paramedics, OHS and me | Scoop.it
Donna Vandermaat's insight:

My friend Nita often takes her children to the local playground.  She says that she is continuously looking out for hazards that her children and herself could come across.  For example, she has to be aware of any uneven ground, slippery pathways, dangerous items, bad food left out.  She has to be aware of any slips, falls, cuts, abrasions that her children and other children could have happen.  Nita says that she is always keeping in mind her children's safety.  Anything that happens whilst at the playground that could have been prevented she brings to the attention of the manager or staff members that are working.

Paramedic | Paramedics, OHS and me | Scoop.it
Donna Vandermaat's insight:

Nathan is a rural paramedic, and says that there are daily OHS issues that he needs to be aware of at all times, not only for himself but also his patients.  Due to his work environment changing everyday, every job, he needs to be very aware of all hazards, such as, Falls, trips, uneven ground, heavy patients, access and egress issues, lifting of patients, moving patients, spills, needle stick injuries, contamination, viral infections.  Nathan has specific PPE that he is required to wear such as, gloves, eye protection, protective gowns, infection control procedures, helmets, just to name a few. All injuries are to be reported through an online system so the Workplace Health and Safety department are kept up to date of injuries and what steps are needed to make sure these injuries are not going to happen again.

Donna Vandermaat's insight:

This is Mick's work environment, he owns and runs"Bootcamp Bribie".  Mick's work environment is very different and challenging everyday.  He has to be very careful in regards to OHS for himself and all his members.  OHS issues/hazards like, slips, falls, trips, abrasions, cuts, poor weather, poor lighting, just to name a few.  Mick does not have any real PPE to wear, as he has different working environments for example the beach, the pool, and the football fields.  Mick manages these OHS issues by making sure all his members are safe from hurting themselves, keeping an active eye out for any possible hazards, making sure that all injuries are accounted for and how to insure these injuries do not happen in the future.
