Google announced on Wednesday that it is rolling out a significant redesign for its social networking platform Google+, which will allow users to create a more customized experience on the site. The company said it will introduce a variety of new features to the site in the next few days, from customizing apps and the navigation bar to more flexibility with profile pages and pictures. If you were waiting for Google to release a screen-sharing feature inside the Hangout real-time collaboration platform, that time has come.
In the next 48 hours Google will be rolling out to all Google+ users the ability to screen-share during any hangout session.
From Christopher Johnson G+ post: "When we launched Hangouts with Extras last September, we wanted to test new features and get feedback from users.
We’ve learned a lot over the past few months, and today we’re rolling out a new Hangouts look and feel that incorporates some of the “extras,” and better reflects Google’s overall design ( http://goo.gl/gG1NA ).
Highlights include:
- Screensharing: share what’s on your computer screen with everyone in the hangout. This is the first of many extras we’re graduating to Hangouts proper.

If Plus gets any sort of real momentum among end-users – and I firmly believe it will – Google’s unique ability to finally tie search and social together in one package will force the hand of business, making Google + the place to be for interaction between companies and their customers. I’m not predicting the death of Facebook (or even Twitter), but smart companies will spend some time making sure they’re focused on how to BE social, and not how to DO social on a particular platform.
