Like most newspaper reporters, I got into the biz because a) I love writing and b) I'm pretty good at it. But it's a sobering profession. You file your masterpiece, only to find your editor thinks it's two dozen "tinks" shy of publishable.

Important advice to follow before turning in any draft of your master thesis, presentations, papers, etc. Re-read and edit your work! If you don't read through it smoothly you can't expect others to.

Economics as a moral science — Crooked Timber

Economics as a moral science | I Robeyns http://t.co/qq0XBwLGPS

Via Peter Boettke

Peter Boettke's curator insight, November 1, 2013 7:09 AM

What is missing here, in an otherwise very relevant discussion, is the fact that politcal economy can be a value-relevant discipline (moral science or branch of moral philosophy) only to the extent that economics is practiced as a value-free science.  This is why reading Weber-Mises-Robbins should be required of all social scientists at the beginning of their careers to get them straight on means-ends reasoning, the middle of the career to remind them of what they are supposed to be doing, and the end of their careers to judge them for what they should have been doing all along.  If you mess up the science part, then you loose the moral philosophy part as well, and then economics and political economy becomes nothing more than opinion parading as a discipline (in other words the way political theory, sociological theory, etc. is practiced at the moment).  Yes, Virginia, there is a SCIENCE of economics, and an ART of political economy.
