Feeling like on a secret-mission, Me, a non-Italian with a normal metabolism have been analysing the Italian diet for more than 4 years and finding out why obesity and over-weight are not major problems in this amazing country. If you take a quick look at the Italian population everybody seems very close to their perfect weight and very healthy (if you need numbers: just 9% of people in Italy are heavy enough to be considered obese, compared to 32% of Americans). A total metabolism-mystery for us foreigner food-lovers; how come “Pizzerie” are always fully booked and everyone has a Spritz in their hand by 7pm? I have resumed Italian diet secrets for you in 10 easy rules…

Italiaans Dieet

 

Inderdaad, het klopt! Wanneer ik in mijn favoriete land rondhuppel zie ik maar heel weinig Italianen die te zwaar zijn. Het Italiaanse dieet werpt zijn vruchten af! Wel vind ik persoonlijk dat de Noord Italiaanse eetcultuur wat zwaarder op de maag valt dan de Zuid Italiaanse maaltijden. Het enige nadeel voor mij als ras Nederlandse met een Italiaanse ziel is dat ik het Italiaanse eten zo vreselijk lekker vind dat ik wanneer ik in mijn geliefde Italie ben ik de hele dag aan eten denk. Na het ontbijt beraam ik al plannen over waar de lunch genuttigd kan worden en in de loop van de middag passeren in gedachten de diverse restaurantjes voor het avondeten.

Dus gezond, jazeker,...maar oh zo verleidelijk om toch te veel van het een en ander naar binnen te werken!  Buon appetito!!!

Wel vind ik persoonlijk dat de Noord Italiaanse eetcultuur wat zwaarder op de maag valt dan de Zuid Italiaanse maaltijden. Het enige nadeel voor mij als ras Nederlandse met een Italiaanse ziel is dat ik het Italiaanse eten zo vreselijk lekker vind dat ik wanneer ik in mijn geliefde Italie ben ik de hele dag aan eten denk. He loads up the back of the Ape with fresh-picked tomatoes off the vine, almonds in their shells, and in a few weeks, olives. After their bumpy journey back home, they are stacked at the mouth of his garage so he can sit with the door open, do some work, and chat with neighbors and friends who drop by.

 

He hangs his beautiful tomatoes on the wall of the garage where they serve him most of the year. Usually they last until mid-to-end of spring, and he’ll periodically clean the rotting tomatoes out from the vines if needed. He can ferret out the rotting ones as lovingly as he can select the juiciest and ripest ones for that night’s pane e pomodoro (bread and tomatoes). But today he’s squeezing the juice and seeds from the best ones to can them and use them later.

Mamma Giulia is in charge of all kitchen goings-on at Masseria Provenzani. She starts early each morning preparing breakfast for the masseria's guests. Guests wake to scents of bread, brioche and sometimes a crostata, or two.

 

The communal breakfast table is full of  Mamma Giulia's baked goods and homemade jams.  And the beverages add to the intoxicating aromas wafting through the air; there's espresso, cappucino or hot chocolate to wash down the delicious breads.

Italy’s least stereotyped region is Trentino-Alto Adige. The region is comprised of two provinces, Trento and Bolzano.

 

The food of Trentino–Alto Adige is as distinct as the two cultures of the region. Suditirol cuisine is heavily influenced by the Austrian heritage with sauerkraut, wurst and particularly game that is stewed and served with polenta, fresh water fish, and Austrian style pastries and cakes. Lombardy and Venito influence Trentino or Trent’s cuisine. However, neither cuisine is similar to what most people consider “Italian Food”.

Italians eat Italian food, and their own region’s at that, but that is no bad thing. Tuscan cuisine is rich and flavourful with delicious specialities such as ribollita (bread and vegetable soup) and bistecca Fiorentina, a huge slab of beef on the bone that’s best shared.

Fall is the season of delicious seasonal foods and the last harvest before winter. Travel along the winding Tuscan roads to explore enchanting areas with lots of history and it won’t be difficult to come across food festivals dedicated to seasonal delicacies. Many of these festivals not only in Tuscany, but throughout Italy, are advertised with brightly-colored posters for a festa or sagra, where you can sample regional foods and wines while enjoying local entertainment.

So lovely to be experiencing cooler temperatures and even nicer to see one of my favourite Tuscan treats in the bakeries again.  It’s that time of year again when not only are the grapes being picked for the Vendemmia but also for the wonderfully tasty Schiacciata con l’Uva.

 

Here is my recipe from a previous post for those tempted to try this themselves!  Trust me – It is easy to make and incredibly delicious!
