Things that matter. Pass 'em on.
Ellie Hothersall's insight:
Normally Upworthy posts benign stuff with annoying titles. But this one got to me because it really shows a difference between how I think about the problem of Ebola (yes, more Ebola). It is hard to imagine that the dominant view of managing this disease, or any other, is to close the frontier...

Ellie Hothersall's insight:
As Ebola continues to dominate the news, the domestic response in the west strikes many as disproportionate and unreasonable. Perhaps those seeking to keep single health care workers under house arrest should think of better ways to solve this problem...?

How many people infected with ebola die?

How many people infected with ebola die? | Pandemic (flu focus) | Scoop.it
The WHO says that "up to 90%" of people with ebola die - but how meaningful is this figure?
Ellie Hothersall's insight:

A good summary of the current ebola outbreak, and a description of the case fatality rate, which is a very important measure in an outbreak situation. Ebola is unusual in having such a high rate - even the low end of the scale (41%) is higher than we see with most infectious diseases.

Daniel Tan's curator insight, August 22, 2013 9:40 PM

researchers from the Shantou University Medical College and the University of Hong Kong collected samples from 1,341 sources, which included chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, partridges, quail, fecal matter and water from live poultry markets. The researchers looked at the genetic makeup of the viruses from each animal and compared them. The researchers concluded that, "domestic ducks seem to act as key intermediate hosts by acquiring and maintaining diverse influenza viruses from migratory birds."

Daniel Tan's curator insight, October 24, 2013 10:07 PM

A new case in October in a 35-year-old man from China's eastern Zhejiang province shows that the virus "has re-emerged in winter 2013" and "indicates a possible risk of a larger outbreak of H7N9 this winter.

In a detailed analysis of the 35-year-old man's case, scientists from the Zhejiang Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said it differed from previous ones in that it was a severe case in a younger patient "with no obvious underlying diseases and no obvious recent direct contact with live poultry".
