Back in May, a 1923 Leica O-Series camera became the most expensive camera on the planet after being sold for roughly $2.79 million at a WestLicht auction. That camera was a prototype camera, and just one of 25 made (only 12 of them exist today). If you’re wondering what the most expensive non-prototype camera is, look no further than the latest WestLicht auction that was held earlier today. The Leica M3D seen above fetched a staggering €1.68 million, or roughly $2.18 million, becoming “the most expensive camera from a serial production ever.” The camera was one of four that was specially customized by Leitz for American photojournalist David Douglas Duncan, and was used for many years to document powerful photographs of war. Although the camera is still listed in “very good” condition, it’s definitely not the immaculate device you might expect to see when looking at a collectible camera: Read more at http://www.petapixel.com/2012/11/24/most-expensive-production-camera-and-first-leica-m-sold-at-auction/#DHW2EjMIULvd3E6m.99

O casi.

For full-frame, 35mm image capture excellence and multiple lens options in a camcorder form factor, check out the NEX-VG900 from Sony. Ever the trendsetters, Sony has gone and done it again with the VG900. A couple of years ago they graced us with the NEX-VG10, the "world's first consumer interchangeable lens HD camcorder." Until that time, DSLR cameras, with their numerous lens options, offered video producers creative choices that consumer camcorders just couldn't compete with. Another huge advantage long held by DSLRs has been that of full-frame image capture. Sony has now shattered that barrier with the new NEX-VG900, calling it "the world's first consumer 35mm full-frame interchangeable lens camcorder.

Sony has agreed to pour $645 million into Olympus in exchange for 11.5 percent of the embattled company, becoming the single largest shareholder. While the companies announced that they are considering cooperating in the digital camera industry, the main motivation for Sony wasn’t photographic imaging but body imaging. Olympus is one of the major players in the medical endoscope market, holding about 70% of sales, and Sony’s investment allows it to dip its toes into this lucrative industry. Sony and Olympus are planning to set up a new joint company for endoscopes by the end of the year with 51% and 49% ownership, respectively.

After a much extended product cycle than first expected, Panasonic has just announced the Lumix GH3 camera, which will replace the GH2, which is even called the “predecessor” in the official GH3 press release dated September 17, 2012. The GH3 is somewhat larger and tougher, which I know many will applaud, and is full of audio/video improvements including a full 3.5mm mic input instead of the prior 2.5mm, manual audio levels when recording, a headphone jack for monitoring, as well as several new video recording formats, including much higher bit rate recording without having to hack the camera. Ahead you’ll see a promotional video from Panasonic and many of its new audio/video specs
