A warning to #Israel

We Israelis must be careful lest we become not a source of pride for Jews but a distressing burden. Israel is the criterion according to which all Jews will tend to be judged. Israel as a Jewish state is an example of the Jewish character, which finds free and concentrated expression within it. Anti-Semitism has deep and historical roots. Nevertheless, any flaw in Israeli conduct, which initially is cited as anti-Israelism, is likely to be transformed into empirical proof of the validity of anti-Semitism. It would be a tragic irony if the Jewish state, which was intended to solve the problem of anti-Semitism, was to become a factor in the rise of anti-Semitism. Israelis must be aware that the price of their misconduct is paid not only by them but also Jews throughout the world. In the struggle against anti-Semitism, the frontline begins in Israel.

Ziad Abu Ein’s death could be to Abbas’ advantage — Medium | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
Security coordination is an integral part of the Oslo process that gave birth to the Palestinian Authority. Abbas and key PLO officials believe security coordination to be the bridge toward Palestinian statehood. If the Israelis are clearly not open to ending their occupation, and as it becomes clear that the Israelis are opposed to both the armed resistance of Hamas and the nonviolent resistance of the PLO, it means this supposed bridge to statehood can no longer provide hope for the future.

Dangers that religious extremism pose to the state, the status of the Jewish people in the world

Dangers that religious extremism pose to the state, the status of the Jewish people in the world | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
mcc43's insight:

There should be discussion of the dangers that religious extremism pose to the state, to the status of the Jewish people in the world and to Judaism. The dangers of Messianism must be presented candidly, with full exposure of the catastrophes produced by false messiahs in the past.

All these lessons can be summed up as the pressing need for self-criticism. Certainly Israel is not guilty of everything that has gone wrong in the occupied lands. But self-criticism is imperative in order to counter balance the tendencies to self-righteousness and self-pity that stem from basic Jewish attitudes, from the historical experience of persecution and from the ethos fostered by Menachem Begin. No factor endangers Israel’s future more than self-righteousness, which blinds us to reality, prevents a complex understanding of the situation and legitimizes extreme behaviour.

#Israele, è Reuven #Rivlin il nuovo presidente

#Israele, è Reuven #Rivlin il nuovo presidente | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it

#AlQaeda now frontline threat to #Israel | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
With gains in Syria, Lebanon and Egypt, al-Qaeda and its affiliates threaten Israel more than ever.
mcc43's insight:

""In the south, al-Qaedism is growing in Egypt in the wake of the army coup last summer that toppled the democratically elected Muslim Brotherhood government. Zawahri had predicted from the start of the Arab Spring in Egypt that the army would stage a counterrevolution and he urged his sympathizers to prepare for an armed struggle, a jihad, to fight them. In the mind of al-Qaeda supporters, the coup validated their narrative: Peaceful, democratic change was an illusion, the Brotherhood was too weak and the army too determined to keep power. Al-Qaeda propaganda charges that the coup was arranged behind the scenes by the Saudi intelligence service with the silent blessing of Israel and the collusion of the Americans.""

mcc43's insight:

Information from Kerry’s mid-December meeting with the chairman of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, revealed that the US was on the verge of proposing an outline for an interim peace plan addressing “everything [Israel] wants” while pushing aside Palestinian sovereignty, the status of Jerusalem and the refugee question.

Fearing a repeat of the Camp David meeting in 2000 – when then US President Bill Clinton adopted the Israeli position – Abbas briefed a special meeting of Arab foreign ministers on the impending American peace plan. Abbas informed the gathering of the Palestinian refusal to enter into another interim understanding, a new racialist recognition of Israel or any proposal favouring extended an Israeli presence in any part of the West Bank or at the border with Jordan.

Much Jewish history texts, for instance, are there to divert the attention from the peculiar and tragic fact that along their history, Jews have managed to bring on themselves an endless chain of disasters. A One-State Solution in Palestine: Pros and Cons - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

A One-State Solution in Palestine: Pros and Cons - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
While Palestinians and the international community have traditionally favored a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a one-state solution is the only way to move forward.
mcc43's insight:

[...]two-state solution proposals do not take into consideration the situation on the ground, in such a way that it is impossible to imagine how an independent and viable Palestinian state would be established. But while the two-state solution has yet to be totally ruled out, the United States must be considering an alternative solution more appropriate for Israel. This alternative solution would be based on Israel’s continued control over 60% of the West Bank and the establishment of a Palestinian state composed of isolated areas in the West Bank separated from each other by the territories taken over by Israel, including the Gaza Strip.

[...] one state solution . strategy will not gain popularity among the Palestinians who do not wish to become second class Israeli citizens.
But is their life better now under occupation?
Is there another option under the current circumstances? I think that if they retain this plan the only thing they will be losing is their illusions, and at this critical crossroad in Palestinian history this may be the only way to avoid weakening their cause. Their journey will be harsh and painful, but it is an opportunity to build a democratic state that the Ramallah gathering aspires to and which will allow the refugees to return to their ancestral land.

Why Kerry Was Wrong to Say the Two-State Solution Is Nearly Dead

Why Kerry Was Wrong to Say the Two-State Solution Is Nearly Dead | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
We shouldn't take the settlements as an irreversible fact
mcc43's insight:

If Kerry genuinely believes in the imminent demise of the two-state option, he must envisage dramatic geopolitical changes in the near future. Otherwise, what might render a hitherto feasible arrangement defunct? While certain political, demographic, and regional developments may tip the scales against partition, most observers pin the end of the two-state solution on the ever-expanding Israeli settlements. It is becoming increasingly common to identify a looming red line beyond which the number of settlers or the extent of settlements will render an Israeli pullout obsolete.

The idea that the two-state solution is losing relevance in the face of growing settlement activity is hardly new. Its origins can be traced back to an "irreversibility thesis" that Israeli intellectual Meron Benvenisti has been propounding for 30 years. Benvenisti is quoted in a New York Times article from November 1982 claiming that Israel's "de facto annexation" of the West Bank sets the clock on five minutes to midnight as to dividing historical Palestine. The Doomsday clock has been ticking ever since, but although it is evident that the settlements are the single most crucial obstacle to peace, it is less clear why so many people consider their presence irreversible. For even the doomsayers cannot deny that the settlements are an extremely costly venture which remains completely dependent on Israeli funding. Reel in the infrastructures, rescind the lavish benefits, provide incentives and reparations for repatriated settlers, and the whole problem shrinks back to manageable proportions.

#HamiraHass talking to #Palestinians far from #Gaza

#HamiraHass talking to #Palestinians far from #Gaza | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
What’s called life in Gaza doesn’t let anybody think about oneself, to know oneself, to know what he or she really likes and wants. Only now am I beginning to ask myself who I am, what I want. In Gaza, people’s ambition is to play cards, or for there to be electricity in the evening, or for the bomb not to fall near their house, or for the rain not to make the sewage overflow. What aspirations can there be for people serving a life sentence like the Gazans?

“People’s concern in Gaza is how to kill time. My brother is a merchant and makes a decent living. But life isn’t only money. A person has to develop inside, in his soul. But nobody has plans, because they’re not only serving life sentences, they could die at any moment. Is it any wonder that people are becoming increasingly religious? When death is breathing down your neck, you prepare for Allah.”

Diario da Gaza 18-24 novembre 2014

mcc43's insight:

Ero semplicemente scomparso” | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
mcc43's insight:

Hezbollah vs. Hamas

Hezbollah vs. Hamas | PALESTINIANS & ISRAELIS | Scoop.it
Hezbollah has positioned itself, through a calculated sectarian approach, as the enemy of all Sunni Islamists in the region (including Hamas).
mcc43's insight:

But this also means that Hezbollah is facing a new danger in Lebanon, and Wednesday night's news shows that Palestinian camps could again be used to partake in a conflict on Lebanese soil, this time against Hezbollah.

So here we have two supposedly resistance groups fighting each other, politically and most probably militarily. Their fight in Syria will soon move into Lebanon, and when Jabhat al-Nusra decides to launch its attack against Hezbollah in Lebanon, it will come as no surprise if Hamas and other Islamist groups in the Palestinian camps carry it out.

Now that the Lebanese parliament has decided to extend its term for at least 15 months, a new government will probably not be formed anytime soon unless PM-designate Tammam Salam submits to Hezbollah's demand that it maintains control over government and state institutions. This means that Hezbollah is not only still a part of the Lebanese state, it has also managed to maintain its control over Lebanon's institutions.

Therefore, all of Lebanon's institutions and sectors will be a target to whoever wants to attack or pressure Hezbollah.
