TTP threaten Imran Khan over Waziristan march – The Express Tribune

The Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) have threatened Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan against a planned march to Waziristan to protest US drone attacks. Talking to the Associated Press on Monday in South Waziristan, a Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesperson Ahsanullah Ahsan had said they would attack Khan because he calls himself a ‘liberal’, a term usually reserved by them for a person lacking religious belief. The threat comes as a surprise since not only Khan and TTP share their opposition to drone strikes in the region, but the former, one would argue, has demonstrated his religiosity publicly, praying in front of the crowd at his rallies. Ahsan reiterated in the interview that the TTP did not want Khan’s help in opposing drone attacks. “We will not accept help or sympathy from any infidel,” said Ahsan, referring to Khan. “We can fight on our own with the help of God,” he said, as, ironically, drones flew overhead.

PML-N not in a hurry to avail IMF loan

Chatting in Code on Walkie-Talkies in Pakistan's Tribal Areas

Chatting in Code on Walkie-Talkies in Pakistan's Tribal Areas | Pakistan Weekly News | Scoop.it

FATA: Sharif loves using his mukhabera. "I use it daily, mostly at night time, because signals are clear at that time," he says. "I am in touch with most of my friends this way." Mukhabera means walkie-talkie in Pashto. For Sharif, this tool is what a mobile phone might be to other young men around the world: a cheap, reliable way to keep in touch with friends and family, so long as they are within an 18-mile range. Every week, he spends about 100 rupees, just over one U.S. dollar, on batteries. In the evenings, his group of friends all tune in to "hang out" on the same frequency. "Everyone in my village is schizophrenic. You hear screams in the middle of the night from people having bad dreams about the drones. Everyone is always angry or suspicious of everyone else." Sharif likes to stay connected, and not only for fun. His life depends on it. Sharif, 28 years old and unemployed, lives in Datta Khel, a town located on the border with Afghanistan in Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Kurram’s displaced: NA-38 candidates ask ECP to delay election further

FATA: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate from Kurram Agency has appealed to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to further delay elections in NA-38 because of the ongoing military offensive in the area. More than 40,000 tribesmen have been forced to leave for settled areas, including Peshawar and Kohat, and are now homeless, said the tribal leader. “If you hold elections now, you will deprive a large number of people from their right to vote.” The PML-N candidate also accused the Kurram Agency Political Administration of supporting the Jamiat-e-Ulema-Islam-Fazl’s candidate Munir Khan Orakzai. “It is the duty of the political administration to assist people, and not to take sides.” Orakzai demanded the immediate reshuffling of the existing political agents to ensure transparent polls. In addition to NA-38, two other constituencies have yet to complete polling. In NA-41 South Waziristan four polling stations will have re-elections after allegations of rigging emerged. Widespread mismanagement and rigging by the establishment in FATA (opinion)

The election commission and political administration have failed to conduct free and fair elections in the terror-hit FATA. The political parties’ nominated candidates miserably failed to gain ground during elections in FATA, whereas the rich and influential independent candidates overwhelmingly swept in almost all the war-hit tribal regions except Bajaur NA 44, FR Peshawar NA 47 and SWA NA 41. Majority of the candidates, whether independents or political parties’ nominees, have outrightly rejected the results of the elections almost all over the FATA. The voters’ lists were found full of mistakes, with names of voters and displaced people missing, whereas the locations of polling stations had also caused inconvenience to the tribesmen, particularly women, who numbered in thousands and could not vote.
