Activist Jibran Nasir freed by police after arrest near CM House

Lawyer and activist Mohammad Jibran Nasir, who has been leading protesters in Karachi against activities of the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), was freed by the police after he had been arrested on Thursday from near the Chief Minister House.

Energy crisis: Govt has failed to end load shedding, says Wattoo.

The government has failed to do anything to end load shedding in the country as it had promised during the elections, Pakistan Peoples Party Punjab president Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo said on Sunday.“A major electricity crisis will be upon us in a few days when the furnace oil stocks get depleted. The people should prepare themselves for the worst,” Wattoo said.

Most of Balochistan still without power

The power supply suspended on Saturday night could not be fully restored in Balochistan till Sunday evening and 28 districts, including Quetta, were suffering an acute shortage of electricity with a majority of them facing a complete blackout.

CM gives nod to convert schools to solar energy

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given approval to converting government schools to solar energy under the off-grid solar solution programme.Addressing a meeting , the chief minister said that more than 4,000 primary schools of rural areas in Punjab would be converted to solar energy in the first phase and a programme had been evolved to install solar panels in primary schools.

Prime minister saves ministers, alienates civil servants

By asking the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to go after the former managing director of Pakistan State Oil for “misappropriation, mismanagement, incompetence and corruption”, and suspending top officials of the Petroleum Ministry in the wake of the recent crippling shortage of petrol, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif might have been able to save his ministers from embarrassment. But he has ended up alienating the federal bureaucracy on which the PML-N government is known to have been relying heavily.

PM orders swift restoration of power amid nationwide breakdown

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif  ordered the ministry of water and power and other concerned quarters to restore electricity at the earliest following a major power breakdown that plunged almost the whole country in darkness last night.He directed for effective measures to be taken to thwart such events from happening again in the future.Speaking after a report was presented to him on the issue, the prime minister directed all concerned departments to restore electricity on war footing.

Serious differences: PTI workers’ convention marred by internal strife .

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Workers’ Convention in NA-122 constituency was held on Sunday amidst heavy sloganeering between two rival groups.The convention was organised by the PTI Punjab at Rasheed Park in Ichhra. At the start, a group of workers expressed reservations over the absence of party leaders Abdul Aleem Khan, Mian Muhammad Aslam Iqbal and Shoaib Siddiqui.They chanted slogans against Naeem Mir, a spokesperson for the Punjab PTI, who had organised the convention.

CM’s son-in-law remains senator for six years on stay order

 A senator of Pakistan People’s Party, Adnan Khan, is about to complete his six-year term in the Senate on a stay order from Peshawar High Court.The court had in Feb 2009 granted interim relief to him and suspended an order of the returning officer concerned whereby he was disqualified from contesting the Senate polls.Mr Adnan, who is son-in-law of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, was only 34 when he contested the 2009 Senate elections on a seat reserved for technocrats on the basis of the said stay order.Since the interim relief was granted to him, no noteworthy progress took place in a writ petition filed by him against the order of the returning officer. On most of the occasions the petitioner’s counsel applied for adjournment.

4,000 teachers to be recruited in Balochistan soon: CM

Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch urged people on Sunday to equip their new generation with education.Speaking after inaugurating a model school in the Sanni Shoran area of Kachhi Bolan district, he said 4,000 teachers would soon be recruited across the province through the National Testing System.The chief minister said his government had pledged to resolve issues of education and health sectors on a priority basis because it knew that no goals of progress and prosperity could be achieved without promotion of education.
