China and India, the two emerging giants are engaged in a rivalry for global influence that spreads much farther afield. 

 

china and indias rivalry is spilling over into global diplomacy and international institutions where Beijing and Delhi have elbow-jabbed over development loans and a seat for India on the U.N. Security Council

 

E: the building of infrastructure in nations like Ghana s rich in gold, cocoa and timber and is a new oil producer. Ghana's government moved into a presidential palace funded by India in February. 

 

China handed over a new foreign ministry building, a month later.

 

 Beijing and New Delhi announced an end to the three-week standoff, agreeing for troops on both sides to pull back before the fracas threatened several high-level meetings.

Saturday's election marks the first time a civilian government in Pakistan has completed its full term and handed over power in democratic elections.

Summary: There are many Major issues going on in Pakistan.

Some that include political, economic and social issues.

 

E & P: Faltering economic growth; The economy has grown at less than 4 percent a year under the most recent government, Annualized rate of around 25 percent in some months. Inflation rate has fallen and averaged around 11 percent last year. 

 

E: Energy shortages; Electricity shortages nearly doubled under the ppp compared with the previous administration. Some places in pakistan suffer blackouts for up to 18 hours a day during summer months. 

 

Ntk; Taliban attacks; The military has launched numerous operations against the Pakistani Taliban in the country's northwest tribal region along the Afghan border during the past five years. (need more information)


P & E & S: Violence; Deadly violence struck again Friday, with a pair of bombings against election offices in northwest Pakistan that killed three people and a shooting that killed a candidate in the southern city of Karachi.


Most attacks have been traced to Taliban militants, who have vowed to disrupt a democratic process they say runs counter to Islam.

The CIA's drone campaign against al-Qaida and other militants in the tribal regions has stirred much resentment in Pakistan

P: Pakistan's prime minister said he wants good relations with the united states  but criticized american drone strikes on militants as a violations of the countrys soverenignty.

 

P: Nawaz Sharif a dovouted muslim and populist, is expected to supplant president asif ali zardari as the international face of pakistan following his partys resounding victory in saturdays election. He is set to rule over nuclear power whose increasing instability and islamic militant havens are global concern.

 

E: 63 year old sharif hit out at the u.s in statemants while lobbying for votes.

 

P: The relationship has improved somewhat over the last year, but U.S. drone attacks targeting Taliban and al-Qaida militants in Pakistan's tribal region continue to create serious friction between the two countries.

 

Pakistan relies on the U.S. for hundreds of millions of dollars in aid every year.
