Timing and Choice of Treatment May Affect the Quality of Life of Young Breast Cancer Survivors

Timing and Choice of Treatment May Affect the Quality of Life of Young Breast Cancer Survivors | Paige's Yr. 9 Journal | Scoop.it

"The choice and timing of therapeutic interventions may significantly affect the quality of life of young breast cancer survivors in the short term, although other quality-of-life domains such as family relationships may not be negatively impacted after treatment. These findings were reported by Marie Catherine Lee, MD, and colleagues at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Florida, in a recent issue of the American Journal of Surgery.

Study Details

The investigators examined the short-term quality-of-life impairment of 300 premenopausal patients with breast cancer, who were diagnosed before the age of 50 years. Areas of focus included self-perception, views on their sexuality, impact of surgical and oncologic treatment, femininity, and changes in relationships with partners and other family members. All of the women were at least 6 months from their last curative treatment (except for ongoing hormone therapy).

Survey questionnaires—which included 50 validated questions from other tools and 13 new, unvalidated quality-of-life items—were sent to all 300 women, and nearly 50% responded. Eight domain clusters centered on family/social network, appearance, relationships, sexuality, work/finances, physical symptoms, distress, and life with breast cancer. Other questions focused on demographics and treatment, and the investigators collected specific treatment data from electronic medical records for correlation with patient-reported information."

Timing is everyhting when it comes to Breast Cancer. This terribe lifestyle disease CAN be prevented and treated. Regular mammograms are necersarry in every womans life to help detect the early stages of the cancer.

Susan Zager's curator insight, November 15, 2013 2:22 PM
Key Points:
  • Most young breast cancer patients surveyed did not experience shifts in family or home as a consequence of their treatment.
  • Systemic therapy had no statistically significant impact on any single quality-of-life domain or on overall quality of life.
  • Locoregional therapies such as therapeutic mastectomy, contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, and radiation therapy had the greatest impact on quality-of-life indicators.

Blocking Sugar Intake can Reduce Cancer Risk and Progression (sugar-free for long life")

Blocking Sugar Intake can Reduce Cancer Risk and Progression (sugar-free for long life") | Paige's Yr. 9 Journal | Scoop.it
Sugar fuels cancer. A new study has indicated that blocking dietary sugar can reduce tumor development risk and progression of cancer cells.

For the study, Dr. Cagan and his team engineered fruit flies to express Ras and Src, two important oncogenes, resulting in the development of small head tumors. After feeding the flies a high-sugar diet promoting insulin resistance, they found that high dietary sugar acts together with Ras and Src to increase insulin sensitivity specifically in tumor cells. As MedicalNewsToday reports, “By ramping up signaling of an important pathway called Wingless/Wnt, they increased tumor cells’ insulin receptors to further promote insulin sensitivity. This cascade of activity changed these small, weak tumors and caused them to begin growing aggressively”.

Using these newly identified drug targets (glucose, the RAs/Src oncogenes, and Wingless/Wnt signaling), the researchers identified compounds that could block the process. Using three different drug treatments, the team attacked the three different targets. Together, they “substantially reduced tumor size and progression.” ...

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are preventable lifestyle diseases. These are conditions we control. And if they are creating an environment that fosters prolific tumor growth, we can use that knowledge to combat both cancer and the metabolic disorders that increase the risk of cancer.

Alarming increase in number of HIV cases

Alarming increase in number of HIV cases | Paige's Yr. 9 Journal | Scoop.it
Alarming increase in number of HIV cases...

This article is about the alarming rise in the number of people in Australia who have been diagnosed with HIV. First of all to really understand this article you must understand what HIV is and also what causes this virus.

For starters HIV is the human immunodeficience virus which means it's a virus that attacks your immune system and weakens it over a period of time. HIV is contracted usually through having unprotected penetrative sexual intercourse with someone who has HIV. The HIV virus works by actually attaching itself to the antibodies created by the body destroy it and  causing the antibodies to actually create more of the HIV virus. Inevitably the HIV virus slowly deteriorates the immune system trying to fight the virus which makes it easier for the body to contract other diseases.Such as pneumonia, koposi's,sarcoma and AIDS.

The main purpose of this article is to outline the current situation of the HIV virus and also the course of action the government is going to take to lower this increasing rate of diagnosis. According to thhe article 24,000 to 25,000 Australians live with diagnosed HIV and up to 10,000 people have HIV that hasn't been diagnosed yet. One theory put forward to explain the increase of people diagnosed with HIV is there has been an increase in umprotected sex  between gay men and aslo the fact that one third of the gay men are having sexual intercourse with a casual partner. However this statistic can't explain the complete rise in the number of people diagnosed with HIV as the homosexual  population is minute compared to the heterosexual population.

The government at the moment to curb down HIV is looking towards rapid HIV testing which only takes one hour to retrieve the results and also to approve new antiretroviral drugs .In addition the government is also planning on  lifting  some restrictions on medicine  foe those suffering  early stages of the virus.

This article affects teenagers as it gives a new perspective onto sexual decision making. This article is quite effective since it provides teenagers both homosexual and heterosexual with the right information about the dangers of not only having unprotected sex but also having unprotected sex with a casual partner. The moral I believe in this article is only to have unprotected sex with someone you have been in a relationship with for some time and prior to having unprotected sex having a check-up at the sexual health clinic to know if either of the persons involved in the relationship has as STI.

This article relates to the topic of sexual decision making and also about sexually transmitted infections which my year 9 PDHPE class learnt in term 3.

HIV can be prevented by a good relationship with your partner and strong communication. The use of contraception can help prevent the  transferration of HIV to you or your partner.

BINGE drinking can have a long-lasting negative effect on the brains of teenaged girls, hitting them harder than it does young boys, a study shows.

The study by researchers from the University of California, San Diego and Stanford University found that girls who binge drink - defined as having four or more drinks for women and five or more for men - showed less activity in several brain regions than teetotal teenagers, both girl and boy.
