Connectivity is not binary, the network is never neutral. | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
although the challenges of connecting people sound the same, every trip offers up a new angle on what connectivity means to the locals: its impact on gender roles in India; the rise of love-marriages in Afghanistan; a more level playing field for favela dwellers in Brazil; a stable point of contact in Nigeria; the list goes on..."

63 Texas Republicans Sign Document Saying Marriage Equality Leads To Incest, Pedophilia And Polygamy

63 Texas Republicans Sign Document Saying Marriage Equality Leads To Incest, Pedophilia And Polygamy | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
The Texas Republican party once again proved that it is living in a previous century, when over 60 of its members got together to sign a legal brief which states that same-sex marriage opens the do...
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

In states that have already legalized same-sex marriage, we haven’t seen the crumbling of social order that conservatives insists will happen. Far from destroying the family unit and ruining the country, same-sex couples behave a lot like every other couple: They marry, they have families, some they get divorced, others spend their lives together. In fact, there is even some cutting-edge research which suggests that gay couples raise healthier kids than straight couples on average. Whether you subscribe to that theory or not is beside the point, in every example we have (in the United States and abroad), gay marriage has been fine. Conservatives in same-sex legal states may not like it on an ideological level, but I bet they would have a hard time coming up with an example of how their lives have changed in any tangible way since it happened.

Regenerative Agriculture: Sowing Health, Sustainability and Climate Stability

Regenerative Agriculture: Sowing Health, Sustainability and Climate Stability | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
Destruction of land and soil by poor farming isn't inevitable.
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

The perpetual cycle of planting mono-crops, saturating the crops and fields with toxic chemicals, tilling them under and replanting them destroys the soil and degrades the land by depleting soil nutrients and causing erosion. Overgrazing pastures instead of managing livestock herds holistically, using a system of planned rotational grazing, is equally destructive.

In light of the counter-revolutionary successes after Reagan and Powell, Marcuse’s “philosophy of psychoanalysis” in Eros and Civilization must be repurposed to go beyond the new system of violence so as to prefigure relations of love and pleasure, not domination.

Robert Aickman's cult horror books are being resurrected for the centenary of his birth

Robert Aickman's cult horror books are being resurrected for the centenary of his birth | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
However much you admire the masters of uncanny or supernatural fiction, from MR James or Henry James to Sheridan Le Fanu and Walter de la Mare, you would be hard put to imagine any of them in the vicinity of Marianne Faithfull's bed. Not so Robert Aickman – even if only by proxy, as it were. In one of the revealing afterwords by friends that close each volume in Faber's current reissue of Aickman's superbly sinister "strange stories", Leslie Gardner remembers getting to know the author, by then in his sixties, during her time as a young American talent agent in 1970s London.

Fracked on Their Own Petard: The Self-Implosion of an Industry on the Ropes

Fracked on Their Own Petard: The Self-Implosion of an Industry on the Ropes | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
As Denton seeks to become the first city in Texas to ban fracking, the industry is trying to frame the fight in economic terms. But that turns out to be a poor choice.
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

Go Adam with  your Op/Ed at Truthout: As the industry clutches at straws - and threatens lawsuits - they are alienating more and more people. At a recent City Council hearing, with 600 people sitting in three overflow rooms, 85 percent of Denton speakers supported the ban. When you've got mothers testifying about how living at home has become a nightmare while industry representatives say we must "fully and effectively" exploit mineral resources no matter what - well, it becomes pretty clear who the real extremists are.

Don’t Call It Threat Modeling
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

I think that Deleuze would find this a great introduction to the Society of Control: "Networks overlay each other and touch each other and affect each other all over the place. In this phase of human civilization the interaction of the vast networks we’ve built is just about where everything happens. Understanding how networks function isn’t esoteric specialist knowledge anymore than being able to read is."

When Kenneth Jarecke photographed an Iraqi man burned alive, he thought it would change the way Americans saw the Gulf War. But the media wouldn’t run the picture.
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

The hardware-focused coverage of the war removed the empathy that Jarecke says is crucial in photography, particularly photography that’s meant to document death and violence. “A photographer without empathy,” he remarks, “is just taking up space that could be better used.”

New video shows NASA's cool Flying Saucer in action at last

At last, here's the video of NASA's LDSD test—the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator system that will take a new rover to Mars, one even larger than Curiosity. It's impressive to see the entire system in action, working like clockwork even while the supersonic parachute display failed.

For those who have read about UFO investigations by the government, it is more than a tad ironic that NASA is using weather balloons right now to test their new flying saucers.
