Alice Bell: If we don't recognise the politics of science, we will just get played by those who do
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

"...Play into a game of hierarchies, and even if you don't get to the top, you get to climb a bit. Pierre Bourdieu, in his classic sociology of the university campus, Homo Academicus, talks about the way students are happy to submit to the idea that they are inferior to senior academics because doing so earns them subsequent admittance to a distinguished club of graduates. I think we can see similar patterns at work in terms of the way academic ideas are shared outside of universities too..."

Infographic: Hackers Create An Amazing, Illegal Portrait Of The Internet

Infographic: Hackers Create An Amazing, Illegal Portrait Of The Internet | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it

It wasn’t malicious. The file itself was the size of a small JPEG. It was given the absolute lowest priority. And it was set to self-destruct if anything went wrong. But this small file allowed one single hacker to measure the Internet activity of nearly half a million connected devices around the world, then share the results with everyone.

How was this even possible? The "hacker" barely hacked anything. In reality, they gained access to all these systems because each had the default "root" set as a password. With this access in hand, they ran several tests focusing on Internet structure and activity. And what they created from all this data is a spectacular map that captures a day in the life of the Internet (and all of its users).

Excellent concept map! Check out how Pamela Lloyd describes it :-)

Pamela D Lloyd's insight:

An excellent overview of learning theories, providing not just a synopsis of each, but the connections of each to the principles researchers behind each and the general field of study. The overlapping and interconnecting nature of the ideas is also suggested by the network of lines between the summaries and the people. Another useful feature are links from the pedagogical theory titles and researcher names to the Wikipedia articles for each.

Lynnette Van Dyke's curator insight, May 7, 3:49 PM

Adult learning is a vast area of educational research and probably one of the most complicated. Adults learn differently and have different strategies in learning. Adults Learning Theory and Principles explain in details these strategies and sheds more light on how adults cultivate knowledge.

Talking about adult learning brings us to the concept of Andragogy. According to the article Malcolm Knowles an American practitioner and theorist of adult education, defined andragogy as “the art and science of helping adults learn”. Knowles identified the six principles of adult learning as:Adults are internally motivated and self-directedAdults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning experiencesAdults are goal orientedAdults are relevancy orientedAdults are practicalAdult learners like to be respectedTom Whitby wrote this great article " Pedagogy Vs Andragogy " in which he argued for using these same principles of adults learning in kids learning. I highly recommend this article to those of you interested in learning more about Andragogy. I am also sharing with you this awesome chart created by floridatechnet.org  featuring the differences between pedagogy and Andragogy.

Subversive education

Subversive education | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it

Noam Chomsky on Wednesday joined Bruno della Chiesa, a visiting lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, in an Askwith Forum covering the legacy of the radical Brazilian educator Paulo Freire (1921-1997)... According to Chomsky, known for his outspoken politics, Freire viewed learning as a critical dialogue between teacher and students, with a shared goal of raising consciousness about oppression and social justice. Freirean education is meant to respect and include the oppressed, empowering them to seek social justice for themselves and others

There has been some recent discussion questioning the validity of Connectivism as a learning theory. ( See Keith Wayne Brown) That discussion will certainly continue, but if its not a theory than what? This video shows in simple terms how Connectivism explains the 20th century connected learning process and explains the required behavior of a modern student and Teacher. One could theorize that the ability to incorporate new information into existing knowledge or to synthesize new knowledge from multiple new sources of information derived from a PLN will eventually be a required skill of every student or life long learner.

A Psyche the Size of Earth ~ James Hillman

A Psyche the Size of Earth ~ James Hillman | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it

There is only one core issue for all of psychology. Where is the "me"? Where does the "me" begin? Where does the "me" stop? Where does the "other" begin? For most of its history, psychology took for granted an intentional subject: the biographical "me" that was the agent and sufferer of all "doings". For most of its history, psychology located this "me" within human persons defined by their physical skin and their immediate behaviour. The subject was simply "me in my body and in my relations with other subjects". The familiar term that covered this entire philosophical system was "ego", and what the ego registered were called "experiences".

Over the past three decades, all this has been scrutinized, dismantled and even junked. Postmodernism has deconstructed continuity, self, intention, identity, centrality, gender, individuality. The integrity of memory for establishing biographical continuity has been challenged. The unity of the self has fallen before the onslaught of multiple personalities.... (click title for more)
