Researchers May Have Discovered The Consciousness On/Off Switch | IFLScience | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
Researchers from the George Washington University have managed to switch consciousness on and off in an epileptic woman by stimulating a single region of the brain with electrical impulses. While this is a single case study, it provides an exciting insight into the neural mechanisms behind consciousness, a subject of great interest that is poorly understood despite decades of research.

A Few Thoughts on Power

A Few Thoughts on Power | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it

Business has defeated everything in its path. Its last enemies are the oldest: it is still defied by the ancient Gods of blood revenge, territorial tr...

Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

As a society, we may be conditioned by the historical root of the word power, though, which, as Hillman explains, is poti, i.e. “husband, lord, master,” echoed in the word “despote,” which was used by Greek slaves to address their masters. What we need to learn right now as humans is to exercise our power without dominating anyone, without pathological control and oppression.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 5, 10:03 AM

I am beginning to read Hillman's work. Power is natural flowing phenomenon. How we respond to the flow of power is essential. Awareness is important. Judith Butler says discourse contains power. When I began to worry less about the role School managers played in my work, the more effective I became in my work. I worried about power as something which I had, as well, focusing on the way I used that power.

Hobby Lobby Decision Begins To Contort Under Its Own Logic

Hobby Lobby Decision Begins To Contort Under Its Own Logic | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
Religious groups can object to a regulation, but can they also determine whether it presents an undue burden on them?
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

If anything shows the growing incompetence of the Roberts' court, it must be the overly broad language and too predictable consequences of the Hobby Lobby decision with Alito writing for the majority. I suspect Kagan, Ginsburg, and Sotomayor will be breaking with a lot of precedent in the near future when given the opportunity to lay out further objections and possible corrections to any orders resting on the authority of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby.

The frothiest segment of the US beer market: Kegs and barrels

The frothiest segment of the US beer market: Kegs and barrels | Pahndeepah Perceptions | Scoop.it
The US beer business is booming, thanks to a growing number of craft beer bars. And they're helping sell a lot of drinks packaged in barrels or kegs. Change the world with just one click.
Keith Wayne Brown's insight:

In the majority of cases, doing some good for others actually only takes a bit of your time. Nobody is too busy. Be the change you want to see in the world. If that is getting off of electronic devices, and actually helping some folks in your neighborhood, do that. If it is knowing that what you are doing on your electronic device might help folks you never meet, do that too.

No institutional or nongovernmental organization keeps data about the number of victims of police-perpetrated sexual violence, but advocates say it happens more commonly than many realize.

Coffee has become the subject of thousands of surveys in the past few years. Known as a simple stimulant it also has many other properties. Here are some of the most interesting statistics we could put together for proponents of coffee for healthier living. 1.Lower Mortality At least 5% of surveys reveal that drinking coffee is associated with a decreased risk of mortality in men and women. For example, a long and large-scale survey, which studied more than 400,000 people, revealed that more coffee the men drink, the lower is their risk of mortality. By the survey results, men who

In 1978, after many years of living in London and Tangiers, William S. Burroughs decided to return to his home country.
