Yandex co-founder Ilya Segalovich dies after cancer

Yandex co-founder Ilya Segalovich dies after cancer | packetsalty | Scoop.it

The man who co-founded Russia's biggest search engine, Yandex, has died aged 48 after suffering from cancer.

Ilya Segalovich set up the web company with business partner and school friend Arkady Volozh in 1997.

He was diagnosed with stomach cancer last year and went into a coma on Thursday, the company said.

Yandex is one of Russia's biggest internet companies - valued at £6.5bn ($10bn) and has more than double Google's market share in the country.

Mr Segalovich went to hospital on Wednesday with head pains before suddenly deteriorating, the Financial Times reported this week.

"Primer" Technologies For Enhancing 21st Century Citizenship

"Primer" Technologies For Enhancing 21st Century Citizenship | packetsalty | Scoop.it

What technologies could make the most difference? We must have new ways for citizens to self-organize, both in normal life and (especially) during crises, when normal channels may collapse, or else get taken over by the authorities for their own use. All this might require is a slight change -- or set of additions -- in the programming of the sophisticated little radio communications devices that we all carry in our pockets, nowadays.

How Computers Can Impede Spaces of Learning | DMLcentral

How Computers Can Impede Spaces of Learning | DMLcentral | packetsalty | Scoop.it

It’s not enough to give these devices to students and teachers and expect classroom practice to shift. The preservice teachers I work with are using technology in ways that are familiar to me. Some of the obvious examples: they not-so-discretely text in class and they occasionally get wrapped up in Facebook or online chats with friends when the class is engaged in a class wide discussion. These examples are akin to what I’ve seen in my high school experience. And if these are the students who are going to be our future teachers soon, do we really expect radical shifts in how they treat and adapt technology in schools?

Since we are living in a world where technology plays an important role in daily life, and that includes the classroom, teacher education institutions must develop strategies on how teachers should adapt to changing technologies in a way that it should have positive impact in the classroom, and not the other way around.

Comparative analysis of genetic diversity in Canadian barley assessed by SSR, DarT, and pedigree data - Genome

Comparative analysis of genetic diversity in Canadian barley assessed by SSR, DarT, and pedigree data - Genome | packetsalty | Scoop.it

The aim of this study was to measure genetic diversity and population structure among 92 Canadian barley cultivars using two types of molecular markers (SSRs and DArTs) and pedigree data. A total of 368 alleles were identified at 50 SSR loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged between 2 and 13 ( = 7.36) and PIC values ranged from 0.34 to 0.86 ( = 0.69). For the biallelic DArT markers, the genetic distance matrix was based on 971 markers whose PIC values ranged between 0.06 and 0.50 ( = 0.39). A third distance matrix was computed based on the kinship coefficient. Clustering of genotypes was performed based on the genetic distance matrix and the three dendrograms obtained showed the genetic relationships among barley cultivars. The topological similarity of the three dendrograms was estimated using a congruence index and showed the three dendrograms to be in very good agreement. Statistical analysis also showed a highly significant correlation between the SSR and DArT matrices (r = 0.80, p < 0.002) compared with lower yet significant correlations of the pedigree data with both marker types (r = 0.46, p < 0.002; r = 0.52, p < 0.002). Finally, we assessed linkage disequilibrium in this germplasm and found it to be quite extensive, as the mean distance between marker pairs with significant (P < 0.001) r2 values >0.5 was 3.8 cM. Information obtained from comparing results of different genetic diversity estimation methods should be useful for the improvement and conservation of barley genetic resources.

Leadership Styles. A Variety Of Leadership Styles And When To Choose Which One

Leadership Styles. A Variety Of Leadership Styles And When To Choose Which One | packetsalty | Scoop.it

The best leadership styles arises out of the situation, incorporating the characteristics of the followers and the task or challenge at hand.

Let me say it up front. There is no best ideal leadership style. There are so many leadership styles and theories on it that it almost seems like a "flavor of the month" type of thing.

So as you can see, it is important to master a number of different styles, while remaining aware of the style you naturally prefer.

From Social Pathology to Social Emergence

From Social Pathology to Social Emergence | packetsalty | Scoop.it

Whenever there is disruptive change there is always two opposing forces. One side tries to hang on and control the way things have been and another side wants to break away from the inadequacies of the way things have been.

The Age of Disruption is upon us. As the 21st century unfolds there is a clear tension between those using the disruption around us to further old self-centered me agendas and those seeing disruption as the means to create new us agendas.  As illustrated in the diagram in this post, from the book Leading from the Emerging Future, today we are witnessing the interplay of two powerful social fields: presencing and absencing.

What do you feel are the key digital literacy skills that 21st century learners need? | packetsalty | Scoop.it

Digital literacy has become one of the major issues facing educators in this early part of the 21st century. The need to develop students and teachers digital literacies has become increasingly accepted as fact and yet most teachers' and students' understanding of what exactly constitutes a digital literacy still seems to remain quite vague. Even more vague seems to be teachers' understanding of how precisely we go about developing those literacies.
