Phil Posner: Giving and Living the Good Life with Multiple Sclerosis

Phil Posner: Giving and Living the Good Life with Multiple Sclerosis | Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis | Scoop.it
In 1987, Philip Posner, Ph.D., was teaching neuroscience and running a laboratory when he began experiencing the fatigue and loss of function in his sensory nerves that would eventually be diagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS). The early symptoms were easy to manage, but as hand tremors developed over the years, his laboratory work, involving precise placement of sensitive electrodes, became difficult. He turned routine laboratory work over to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, transit
The Asha Foundation 4 MS's insight:

Having had the opportunity to meet Phil Posner on a number of occasions, it's delightful to see him being profiled and it's great to join with him to help advance the cause of #MS research and activism.

Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) and performance of everyday life tasks: Actual Reality

The Asha Foundation 4 MS's insight:

"Participants with MS performed significantly worse than HC on the BICAMS and the AR. Additionally, better BICAMS performance was associated with more independent AR performance. Self-reports of QOL were not correlated with AR or BICAMS performance."

"Individuals with MS have greater problems with actual everyday life tasks as compared to HC."

Work Participation and Executive Abilities in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis

Work Participation and Executive Abilities in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis | Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis | Scoop.it

The majority of patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are unable to retain employment within 10 years from disease onset.

The Asha Foundation 4 MS's insight:

Often, the focus of understanding #MS disability is upon physical disabilities and challenges, often visible. However, the symptoms and disabilities that are invisible--the ones that cannot be measured on an objective scale of concrete, observable criteria--that cause greater social functioning issues.

How do those who live with #MS continue to be part of the community and engage in socially productive (and financially viable) work given the challenges associated with cognitive impairment?

New approach resets MS #MS #chatMS

New approach resets MS #MS #chatMS | Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis | Scoop.it

An international research team has found a way to calm the autoimmune reaction that leads to myelin destruction in Multiple Sclerosis patients.

The Asha Foundation 4 MS's insight:

"Unlike current immunosuppressive drugs for MS, the new approach does not compromise the immune system’s infection-fighting abilities. The process mimics a natural process by which millions of red and white blood cells, which normally die each day, are cleared from the bloodstream without alerting the immune system."

Real Economic Impact | Financial Wellness Webinar Series #MS #chatms #MSandLife | Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis | Scoop.it
The Asha Foundation 4 MS's insight:

"NDI and Acorda’s long-running partnership began in 2011. That year, NDI conducted an online survey of 3,000 people living with MS. The findings were shocking: 67 percent of respondents reporting their financial well-being declined following their MS diagnosis and, even more surprising, 74 percent of people surveyed reported that they did not use financial planning programs or strategies to manage their finances. Armed with these eye-opening statistics, NDI joined forces with Acorda Therapeutics to launch the Financial Wellness Program to better inform and empower persons living with MS to take greater control of their finances and economic future. This year, however, the Program will be targeted to people with a wider range of disabilities and will coincide with the launch of new e-learning courses and video content."

Fighting Over Fatigue: Will This Chronic Syndrome Ever Be Taken Seriously?

Fighting Over Fatigue: Will This Chronic Syndrome Ever Be Taken Seriously? | Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis | Scoop.it
How can you do medical research on chronic fatigue syndrome when divisions between patients, doctors and researchers are almost as chronic and painful as the disease itself?
The Asha Foundation 4 MS's insight:

Although not related directly to #MS, this article highlights the many challenges faced by those living with diseases that have invisible symptoms that cannot be measured on a scale similar to that provided by a thermometer or height/weight chart.

How do we work to ensure that the very real manifestation of symptoms is not dismissed for this reason, or attributed to psychological disorders? Perhaps it's time to join forces to explore the challenges of fatigue in multiple chronic conditions.

Study shows how dietary fatty acids affect development and progression of multiple sclerosis

Study shows how dietary fatty acids affect development and progression of multiple sclerosis | Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis | Scoop.it
Dietary fatty acids affect the development and progression of autoimmune chronic-inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis. In a collaborative study between the Departments of Neurology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (St. Josef-Hospital) and the Friedrich Alexander Universtiy Erlangen, researchers now found that long-chain fatty acids promote the development and propagation of CNS reactive immune cells in the intestinal wall. On the contrary, short-chain fatty acids promote the developmen
