Follow the Honey: 7 Ways Pesticide Companies are Spinning the Bee Crisis to Protect Profits - Food Revolution Network

Follow the Honey: 7 Ways Pesticide Companies are Spinning the Bee Crisis to Protect Profits - Food Revolution Network | Oven Fresh | Scoop.it
Michele Simon was a speaker in the 2012 Food Revolution Summit. Recently she released a report, produced in tandem with Friends Of the Earth, to bring attention to the dire situation of declining bee populations caused by pesticides. You can find the report here, and read a summary below. If you like to eat, then you should care about what’s happening to bees. Did you know that two-thirds of our food crops require pollination – the very foods that we rely on for healthy eating – such as apples, berries, and almonds, just to name a few. That’s why the serious declines in bee populations are getting more attention, with entire campaigns devoted to saving bees. A strong and growing body of evidence points to exposure to a class of neurotoxic pesticides called neonicotinoids—the fastest-growing and most widely used class of synthetic pesticides—as a key contributing factor to bee declines. The European Union banned the three most widely used

After 30 years of protecting the ozone layer, some reasons to be cheerful

After 30 years of protecting the ozone layer, some reasons to be cheerful | Oven Fresh | Scoop.it
It sometimes feels as if environmental news is never good news, but that certainly isn’t true when it comes to the ozone layer. The UN has announced that the ozone layer is showing “signs of recovery…
rajendrashende's insight:

During  1985 to 1987 the world leaders had difficult negotiations to save the Ozone Layer. But when the going gets tough, tough gets going. UNEP's 2014 Scientific Assessment for the first time provides the  first signs that ozone is on the upswing. In particular, if you look at observations in the Northern mid-latitudes at an altitude of 42 km, we see that ozone has increased over the 2000 to 2013 period.

Environmental news can be good news

It has been said that the single most powerful thing one can do to combat climate change and promote peace is to plant a tree. Jadev Payeng has been doing just that since the 1970's on the once-barren sandbar on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India. Over 40 years later, the forest he's planted is now larger than New York City's Central Park and is home to several thousand varieties of trees as well as an amazing diversity of wildlife, including rhino, elephants, and even tigers.

Shift focus from Trees to People who live on forests. Their well-being will ensure saving trees-FAO Report | Oven Fresh | Scoop.it

UN's World Forest Week: Forests habitats were home to an estimated 80% of global biodiversity. Report, "State of the World's Forests (SOFO) 2014,  said that it was time for the sector to shift its focus from "trees to people". Forests are fundamental to the survival of forest dwellers, including indigenous people.

Forests' contributions ,direct and Indirect , to about 1.1% of the global economy. In employment terms, the formal sector provided 13.2 million jobs, while an estimated 41 million livelihoods were dependent on the informal sector. In 2011, it observed, about 10.9kg of edible non-wood forest products (NWFP) were consumed per capita globally.

As a fuel, it estimated that one-in-three of the world's population depended on woodfuel for cooking, while 764 million people used woodfuel for boiling drinking water.

Forests are also important providers of ecosystem services,For example, they help to deliver clean water by protecting water sheds and water courses.
