A Google exec shares her favorite job-interview question and what she looks for in every candidate

A Google exec shares her favorite job-interview question and what she looks for in every candidate | Career Development, Personal Branding & Job Hunting | Scoop.it

Green, who recently attended Marie Claire's Power Trip summit — a women's networking event sponsored by Dell, Intel, JetBlue, Shiseido, Tacori, and W Hotels — says that there's one question she likes to ask every job candidate she interviews: "How would you make money from an ice-cream stand in Central Park?"
"I'm curious to see how people deal with ambiguity and whether they can have fun while thinking on their feet," she says.
Yasmin Green says she only wants to hire someone who is "innately driven" — "someone who has that force of spirit that powers them through any obstacle that comes their way."
She says that to land a job at Google, you also need to "be prepared to challenge the premise of the question."

9 Ecommerce Marketing Skills That Drive Success | Career Development, Personal Branding & Job Hunting | Scoop.it

From pay-per-click advertising to blogging and from search engine optimization to analytics, ecommerce marketing is broad, diverse, and, potentially, complex. The aim is to find those activities, promotions, and tactics that generate profits.
Five years ago, Practical Ecommerce published an article describing the skills critical for ecommerce entrepreneurs. The suggestions were, perhaps, counterintuitive: be able to write, know how to learn, and be a skilled listener. These skills were about the strategic capabilities that entrepreneurs require.
Building on these skills, here is a set of tactical capabilities that should help your ecommerce marketing succeed.
1. Writing, Content Marketing ...............

5 Ways to Prepare for Success at Every Stage of Your Career

When I was 18, I got a job as a receptionist for a staffing company answering phones and greeting candidates. I didn’t have a passion for this, but I knew I had to start somewhere. I learned as much as I could about the owners of the company and my supervisor. I was willing to prepare for success.
Soon, I was going above and beyond my role, trying to help clients and colleagues however I could. My manager saw this transformation and convinced the owners I would be successful as a recruiter. I quickly realized even unsuccessful people can look successful.
As a recruiter, I worked long hours voluntarily and kept striving to do better work.

Finally, I joined Star Staffing as a regional sales manager. I had to show that I would fit their culture, add to the company and improve revenue. I accomplished this within three months, and then negotiations started with the legal team.

Your All-In-One Guide To Building The Perfect Resume

Whether you just graduated, are returning to school or are looking for a new job, within or outside your career, you need a resume. But not just a resume. You need a great resume. One which will stand out among the rest and help you land that job which you’re hoping will make some positive impact on your life.

My first tip of advice before you even start is to not get lost in the resume, but remember what you’re trying to accomplish. Not only does your resume reflect you, but it also attracts or repels certain kinds of employers. Obviously you want the good ones, and your resume can be that filter. That said, however, you always need to stand behind what is on your resume because ultimately you are what makes the difference in the interview and job.

8 Timeless Leadership Lessons from Andy Grove

8 Timeless Leadership Lessons from Andy Grove | Career Development, Personal Branding & Job Hunting | Scoop.it

Former Intel CEO Andy Grove was, in many ways, larger than life. The Time 1997 Man of the Year and 1997 Chief Executive magazine CEO of the Year was more than a business leader. He was an innovator, a mentor, a survivor and an out-of-the-box thinker. And his ideas on leadership— disseminated in a couple of best-selling books and ratified by his success and experiences running Intel—will live on for decades to come as some of the most-admired lessons in the world.
Grove, who died last week at the age of 79, was a Holocaust survivor who turned Intel into one of the high-tech world’s most influential trendsetters. He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease recently after earlier fighting a battle against prostate cancer which he, characteristically, wrote about.

5 Tips for Picking the Right LinkedIn Profile Picture

5 Tips for Picking the Right LinkedIn Profile Picture  | Career Development, Personal Branding & Job Hunting | Scoop.it

Your profile picture can be one of the most important elements of your LinkedIn presence. Our research shows that just having a picture makes your profile 14 times more likely to be viewed by others.
As a recruiter, this means that this little, square image is your first chance to make a good impression on candidates and is a key element of your recruiter brand.
Typically, we’d recommend having a professional photographer take your headshot. A professional will make sure the lighting is flattering and that you are putting your best foot (or rather face) forward. On average, this will cost you between $200-$400.
However, if you don’t have the budget, don’t fret. Here are 5 tips to help you pick a strong photo from the ones you already have:

'I interviewed over 100 people at Goldman Sachs, and this is what the most impressive job candidates had in common'

I was also part of the investment bank's Harvard recruiting team, she says. "I interviewed anywhere from 20 to 30 job candidates a year, so in total, I interviewed over 100 people at Goldman Sachs," she tells Business Insider. "And this is what the most impressive job candidates had in common: They were confident, poised, articulate, and came to the interviews prepared and ready to 'sell' themselves for the role."

Brown says, "Obviously it's important for any candidate to do research on the job prior to the interview, but those who connected their previous experiences and accomplishments (in college, internships, or full-time jobs) to the job for which they were interviewing, really stood out the most.

10 must-ask interview questions when hiring freelancers

Our personal experience and market trends tell us that more and more companies – big and small – are hiring freelancers to help with growth and other business needs. They’re also treating freelancers like true members of their team as they would a W-2 employee, including them in meetings and on their websites, etc. However, hiring freelancers still takes a different approach than when hiring someone in-house for a few reasons.
For one, freelancers often work remotely, which requires a certain mindset and set of skills. It’s also much easier for either party to cancel the contract in a freelance relationship at any given point. Finally, many freelance engagements are often pursued for short-term projects or to test the waters before hiring full-time.
This all makes sense when you consider that companies often hire freelancers because they need someone who can hit the ground running — someone who is already experienced and skilled in the area they’re hired for. Freelancers are typically used to working with clients and managing their own time and workload. They need very little management to get the job done.

Hello ...... Phone Interview Tips for Job Candidates

The other week, it happened again. I had scheduled a phone interview with a candidate at an exact time and date. So my phone call was to be expected. And when I placed the call to the number given, I expected the greeting on the other end to be at a minimum professional. Ideally, it would also be an immediate recognition of the appointment.
Why? Because it sets the right tone for the rest of this very important conversation.
Instead, I received the unfortunate and awkward “Hello”.
After I paused to shake my head in disappointment, I had no choice but to ask the candidate (in this case, we’ll call her Mary), “Hi, is this Mary?”.
“Yes, it is” Mary replies.
Another pause to shake my head in frustration and wait for her to say something else. Was the candidate even expecting my call?

Reinventing The Career: What Should Organizations Do?

One of the most disruptive changes we've seen in business over the last decade is the end of the traditional "career."
People used to join companies for life: we would look for a great company when we got out of school, join the new-hire development program, pay our dues working up the ranks, and look forward to a nice retirement program 30-40 years later.
Today, the average worker stays at their job for 4.4 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and some research says that Millennials change jobs at twice that rate.
While many think the solution to this problem is to build a flexible, meaningful workplace, and give people benefits like free food, unlimited vacation, and lavish bonuses - in reality the problem is much more fundamental. We have to change the entire design our organizations, which is a topic we highlight in out newest research The New Organization: Different by Design. (Deloitte Human Capital Trends 2016)

An extensive new analysis by Deloitte estimates that over 100,000 jobs will be lost to technological automation within the next two decades. Increasing technological advances have helped replace menial roles in the office and do repetitive tasks.

To paraphrase the Bard’s famous quote: “The first thing we do, let’s replace all the lawyers with automated algorithms.”
Doesn’t have quite the same sting as the original, but it may more accurately reflect the present reality.

7 Tips to Make Sure Your LinkedIn Picture Is Helping, Not Hurting, Your Prospects | Career Development, Personal Branding & Job Hunting | Scoop.it

At first blush, it may have seemed like a good idea -- a great profile pic. What better way to convey one’s importance than to pose with a former president? But the man gripping Bill Clinton’s hand looks scared and nervous, seeming almost to shrink alongside the charismatic leader. Rather than projecting an air of success, he comes off as star-struck and immature.
Another person, a female executive assistant, offers up a relaxed grin, but the probable source of her good spirits can be seen lined up on the bar behind her, and an excess of exposed skin makes her smile the last thing you’re likely to focus on.
If you were looking for a new employee or recruiting a leader for a company, how likely would it be that you’d hire either of these people? Do a gut-check
