The open-source mapping movement is bigger than you might think, burgeoning with underground tenacity and drive that feeds the user-generated machine. Digital map publishers, like Washington, D.C.-based startup MapBox, offer a more customizable alternative to mainstays like Google or Bing Maps that primarily provide its users with professionally curated content and navigation. Not only is MapBox one of the crowd-sourcing pioneers working to build a better breed of map, it’s actually doing it right and making a difference in the open-source mapping space.
The small, 25-person MapBox team has been working out of a garage, building mapping software using a combination of privately-purchased satellite data and open data from NASA, as well as a free user-maintained world map called OpenStreetMap. The collaborative project works in a similar fashion to Wikipedia – it can essentially be edited by anyone free of charge – allowing the software to be altered, updated, and user fact-checked on the fly for greater speed, convenience, and customization.

La recherche en technologies de l’information et de la communication pour l’enseignement (TICE) et en formation ouverte et à distance (FOAD) est pluridisciplinaire. Elle fait notamment appel aux sciences de l’éducation, aux sciences de l’information et de la communication, à l’informatique, à la psychologie (en particulier à la psychologie cognitive), à la sociologie, aux sciences politiques, aux sciences économiques (en particulier à l’économie du développement), aux sciences juridiques et à la philosophie. Ce multi-référencement est source de richesse mais aussi de fragmentation. S’il existe des laboratoires de recherche capables en Europe et au Canada de faire vivre ces croisements disciplinaires, le constat est qu’au Sud, la recherche a du mal à se structurer, la multi-disciplinarité devenant, faute de moyens, un handicap. Le service Veille et analyses de l’IFÉ participe cette année au programme des formations doctorales de l’Université de Lyon, avec deux propositions. L’autre, qui s’achève prochainement, porte plus spécifiquement sur “Comment construire sa veille scientifique et optimiser ses méthodes de travail grâce au web 2.0 ?“. Elle s’adressait en priorité aux doctorants de sciences humaines et sociales de l’Université de Lyon. La préparation de cette formation nous a conduit, avec mon collègue Rémi Thibert, à concevoir une carte mentale sur les outils pouvant être mobilisés pour instrumenter telle ou telle étape du cycle de veille. Nous la rendons publique ici, comme une contribution à la réflexion de toux ceux et toutes celles qui doivent mener une veille dans le cadre de leurs activités de recherche. L’académie digitale, ce sont de nouveaux cours en ligne en accès libre avec exercices sur les thématiques suivantes : datavisualisation et information sur tablettes. Ces modules en français coordonnés par Cyceron (journaliste-formateur) ont été mis en ligne dans le cadre d’un programme de formation établi en 2012 pour l’association (Wan IFRA World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers).
