French and U.N. Troops Are Losing the Battle to Save Mali | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
Imagine your country is a beacon of democracy, when suddenly, it’s overrun by angry rebels and hardcore jihadists. To add insult to injury, elements of the army — after losing control of half the country — stage a haphazard coup and throw your president out of power barely months before...

100 Miles From Dubai: Driving The $80 Million Road To Nowhere

100 Miles From Dubai: Driving The $80 Million Road To Nowhere | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
Jebel Jais was supposed to lead to the boom of the new, growing, oil-rich and tourist-friendly United Arab Emirates. Instead the road became a perfectly paved 22-mile symbol of the global recession, a dream for fast drivers, and a safe haven from a brutal surveillance state — all to the tune of just $80 million.

Pulp fiction? Not while I can still hang on to a box or two of my old books

Pulp fiction? Not while I can still hang on to a box or two of my old books | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
Despite the onslaught of apps and gizmos, nothing has persuaded me that two-to-four hundred pages of text can be improved upon as a medium – only better written, edited, transmitted, and distributed. What has changed is my desire to hang on to physical copies, as almost all of my new purchases are electronic. It’s not just the prospect of shifting all those boxes, but something else: a dematerialisation of my desire for paper and a corresponding accommodation with the ephemeral, absolutely and incontrovertibly caused by the experience of the internet.
Artur Coelho's insight:

Islamic State Is Becoming an Actual Government

Islamic State Is Becoming an Actual Government | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
Islamic State is a bunch of slave-running, homicidal rapists and terrorists. But increasingly, it’s also the legitimate government of northwest Iraq and eastern Syria. Laith Alkhouri and Alex Kassirer from West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center explained: While the Islamic State’s barbarity is undeniable, its life force stems from a side...

Short Documentary Captures The Jalopy Joy Of 24 Hours Of LeMons | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
Everyone has heard of the Le Mans (officially 24 Hours of Le Mans), it's the oldest automotive race in the world and has been held annually since 1923, but have you ever seen 24 Hours Of LeMons? The LeMons is (arguably) way more fun to watch than Le Mans because entrants are only allowed to drive cars valued at less than $500 total.Created by a creative car guy from Car & Driver magazine in 2006, the LeMons is ludicrous fun for viewers, but sometimes not so much fun for the drivers.(Vimeo Lin

Remember When Australia Pretend-Nuked a Rainforest?

Remember When Australia Pretend-Nuked a Rainforest? | Outbreaks of Futurity | Scoop.it
