As much as two-thirds of healthy fish brought on to fishing vessels is thrown back into the sea dead.
The UK government has hailed a "historic" EU agreement to introduce a blanket ban on the "scandal" of dumping dead fish back in the sea.
The agreement is the culmination of efforts by campaigners, including the chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, to have the practice outlawed.
