-▶ WHY IS THE FDA INSPECTING SO LITTLE IMPORTED SEAFOOD?
Don’t know what bacteria, antibiotics, and fish-farming chemicals are in that shrimp cocktail? That’s OK, neither does the FDA!
If you eat a lot of fish, likely as not you're eating something that was raised on a farm and hauled in from thousands of miles away. According to NOAA, we import about 86 percent of the seafood we consume, about half of which comes from aquaculture. And just because you find it in a gleaming supermarket fish case or on a well-presented restaurant plate doesn't mean it's safe to eat.... http://www.onearth.org/blog/why-is-the-fda-inspecting-so-little-imported-seafood

-▶ THE HIGH COST OF CHEAP SHRIMP. While the benefits of lower prices and greater availability are clear for consumers to see, the social and environmental costs associated with shrimp aquaculture and fishing are often not. As a report from CSR Asia highlights, shrimp production as it’s being practiced today is associated with environmental degradation, excessive use of antibiotics and chemicals, and land grabs — not to mention scandals revolving around slavery and human trafficking. http://www.triplepundit.com/2014/06/csr-asia-inclusive-business-solve-shrimp-industry-ills/

▶ BOTTOM TRAWLING MAY CONTINUE UNTIL THERE IS NOTHING LEFT. Bottom trawling is often disguised as fishing for shrimp. The practice scoops up all forms of life and produces a low quality product, such as fish meal, fish oil or animal feed. It destroys bottom environments. It is supported by generous government subsidies for fuel and labour and international labour organisations report the use of slaves on ships. http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/scienceshow/bottom-trawling-may-continue-until-there-is-nothing-left/6315966
