-Financial Times Humans have gained unprecedented supremacy over the seas in a short space of time, thanks to potent technological advances such as satellite tracking devices and engines so formidable they can drag nets big enough to engulf a cathedral. Add in the impact of pollution, from the likes of fertiliser run-off or discarded plastic, and the oceans have changed more in the past 30 years than in all of human history. In most places, the oceans have lost more than 75 per cent of their “megafauna” – large creatures such as whales, sharks, dolphins, rays and turtles. Numbers of some species – oceanic whitetip sharks; American sawfish – are down by as much as 99 per cent. For every 20 leatherback turtles in the Pacific 50 years ago, only one remains...http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/9601c144-9dcd-11e1-838c-00144feabdc0.html#axzz1vqzpHIBt

May 23, 2013 Focusing on Wildlife It sounds ludicrous, but it could just be true: scientists say seagulls may be responsible for hundreds of southern right whale moralities off the Argentine coastline. Since 2003, scientists have documented the deaths of 605 southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) near Península Valdés which the whales use as a nursery. Notably, 88 percent of these were newborn calves. The death rate is so high that researchers now fear for the whales’ long-term survival. Scientists now hypothesize that kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) may be behind the high death rate, since the gulls repeatedly land on southern right whales pecking at them to tear off chunks of skin and blubber for food.,, “The attacks are very painful and cause large, deep lesions, particularly on the backs of young 2-6 week-old calves. ,,, http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/are-seagulls-killing-whales-in-patagonia/
Marian Locksley's curator insight,
May 23, 3:24 AM
“The attacks are very painful and cause large, deep lesions, particularly on the backs of young 2-6 week-old calves. The whales flinch violently and swim away to flee from the attacking gulls,” Rowntree and Mariano Sironi, Scientific Director of the Instituto de Conservación de Ballenas inArgentina, explain. “This harassment can last for hours at a time. As a result, right whale mothers and their calves are expending much precious energy during a time-of-year when mothers are fasting and at a site where little to no food is available to replenish fat reserves. The gull harassment and the extensive wounds they make must have a very negative effect on the health and body condition of these whales and is certainly very stressful.” Delete the scoop?

At the heart of the White House's new Arctic strategy is an elementary but devastating contradiction between what President Obama, in the document's preamble, describes as seeking "to make the most of the emerging economic opportunities in the region" due to the rapid loss of Arctic summer sea ice, and recognising "the need to protect and conserve this unique, valuable, and changing environment."... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/earth-insight/2013/may/17/obama-arctic-energy-security-climate

Penguins are a protected species, but the factory-sized trawlers are vacuuming up the tiny shrimp-like krill that are their main food source. Seals wearing special tags are playing a vital role in collecting temperature and salinity profiles from the polar oceans, delivering insights for weather forecasters, climate scientists and biologists, according to a new review. Polar seas play a critical role in climate and weather systems, but they are poorly understood. Data collection is difficult and expensive, especially during the long, harsh winter, and sea ice prevents access by ships or floating buoys. This is where seals can help – they are ideal for collecting data close to shore and in pack ice. Elephant seals, for example, spend 90 per cent of their lives at sea, travelling up to 4000km on months-long feeding trips. They dive about 60 times a day, reaching depths of up to 2000 metres – deeper than a military submarine. Delete the scoop?

OVERFISHING Beneath the serene beauty of our ocean waters lurks a nightmare worse than any Jaws movie. You could compare it to alien abduction – massive numbers of fish are being snatched out of the water by high-tech factory fishing trawlers. This nightmare scenario is real, and the impacts on our ocean's ecosystems are extensive. Entire populations of fish are being targeted and destroyed, disrupting the food chain from top to bottom.

Once a region for a massive sea turtle meat market, the turtles now face a new threat: bycatch. Loggerhead sea turtles are drowning in bottom-set gillnets, unable to escape from the nets once entangled. The issue has even raises threats of trade embargoes from the U.S. Still, the news is not all gloomy: a rising group of fishermen turned conservationists are working to save these species from local extinction. The fishermen have become scientists, documenting turtle mortalities and threats. Working together, researchers and fishermen have used creative methods to mitigate the local turtle decline... http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/featured-video-saving-sea-turtles-in-mexicos-magdalena-bay/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=featured-video-saving-sea-turtles-in-mexicos-magdalena-bay

Earth Justice Mexico's government is ignoring its own environmental laws
Marian Locksley's curator insight,
May 8, 10:23 AM
Enforcement of environmental laws is critical to preserving unique natural resources such as the Cabo Pulmo reef and accomplishing the twin goals of ocean conservation and sustainable development. Responsible ecotourism provides a source of income for the local community. Coral reefs and mangroves act as fish nurseries and their protection boosts fish populations in adjacent areas, improving the livelihoods of fishing communities throughout the region. April 28, 2012 IUCN, International Union for Conervation of Nature At least 12% of groupers – globally-important food fish species that live on coral and rocky reefs – face extinction, putting the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people around the world at risk, finds a report published today by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission’s (IUCN SSC) Grouper and Wrasse Specialist Group. The study points to overfishing and the booming international luxury seafood trade as major threats to the survival of some grouper species, and to the livelihoods of those who depend on them for food and income. Its authors call for urgent conservation and management efforts to prevent further declines of these species... http://www.iucn.org/?uNewsID=12869

January 22, 2013 Global Possibilities There are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial... Frankenfish could be on your dinner plate by the end of the year. On December 21, at the very end of the last business day before Christmas week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly released its environmental assessment that found “no significant impact” from the controversial AquaBounty AquaAdvantage transgenic salmon.,, What is the rationale behind genetically engineered salmon? Why have scientists spliced genes from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout into the genome of the Atlantic salmon? These genes crank out growth hormone year-round, resulting in a fish that grows faster, cutting the time to reach market weight almost in half. This could mean cost savings for fish farmers, leading to higher profits for the salmon farming industry and (they promise) lower prices for consumers. But there are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial... http://www.globalpossibilities.org/is-genetically-engineered-salmon-safe/

Impact on Oceans and Wild Salmon !
AquaBounty, the company behind the first Frankenfish, insists that their creation poses no threat to wild salmon populations. But research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a release of just sixty GE salmon into a wild population of 60,000 would lead to the extinction of the wild population in less than 40 fish generations.
Not a Good mix and no matter how tightly confined pens are, there's always 'one'
Arun Shrivastava's curator insight,
April 15, 4:39 AM
Some years ago I saw a YouTube discussion on Genetically Engineered salmon where a private firm was advocating genetic engineering of the fish and its advantages. Actually they were interested in profits, nothing else.
The fish grows to three times in weight as compared to the natural salmon in half the time. Salmon's breeding grounds are rivers and salmon eats anything that moves. Did this private company ever conducted a single biosafety test to ensure their engineered salmon's impact on Natural environment and aquatic life? I don't think so.
The posting has many useful links; please explore that.

Thanks Marian. That bit I did not know that just 60 could wipe out 60,000. I must read this report because we don't know if someone in South Asia is using that technology. Will you kindly send me the URL? Thanks again.
