Earth Justice Mexico's government is ignoring its own environmental laws
Marian Locksley's curator insight,
May 8, 10:23 AM
Enforcement of environmental laws is critical to preserving unique natural resources such as the Cabo Pulmo reef and accomplishing the twin goals of ocean conservation and sustainable development. Responsible ecotourism provides a source of income for the local community. Coral reefs and mangroves act as fish nurseries and their protection boosts fish populations in adjacent areas, improving the livelihoods of fishing communities throughout the region. The study points to overfishing and the booming international luxury seafood trade as major threats to the survival of some grouper species, and to the livelihoods of those who depend on them for food and income. January 22, 2013 Global Possibilities There are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial... Frankenfish could be on your dinner plate by the end of the year. On December 21, at the very end of the last business day before Christmas week, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly released its environmental assessment that found “no significant impact” from the controversial AquaBounty AquaAdvantage transgenic salmon.,, What is the rationale behind genetically engineered salmon? Why have scientists spliced genes from an eel-like creature called the ocean pout into the genome of the Atlantic salmon? These genes crank out growth hormone year-round, resulting in a fish that grows faster, cutting the time to reach market weight almost in half. This could mean cost savings for fish farmers, leading to higher profits for the salmon farming industry and (they promise) lower prices for consumers. But there are massively disturbing ethical, environmental, and health concerns that make the introduction of Frankenfish highly controversial... http://www.globalpossibilities.org/is-genetically-engineered-salmon-safe/

Impact on Oceans and Wild Salmon !
AquaBounty, the company behind the first Frankenfish, insists that their creation poses no threat to wild salmon populations. But research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a release of just sixty GE salmon into a wild population of 60,000 would lead to the extinction of the wild population in less than 40 fish generations.
Not a Good mix and no matter how tightly confined pens are, there's always 'one'
Arun Shrivastava's curator insight,
April 15, 4:39 AM
Some years ago I saw a YouTube discussion on Genetically Engineered salmon where a private firm was advocating genetic engineering of the fish and its advantages. Actually they were interested in profits, nothing else.
The fish grows to three times in weight as compared to the natural salmon in half the time. Salmon's breeding grounds are rivers and salmon eats anything that moves. Did this private company ever conducted a single biosafety test to ensure their engineered salmon's impact on Natural environment and aquatic life? I don't think so.
The posting has many useful links; please explore that.
Arun Shrivastava's comment,

Thanks Marian. That bit I did not know that just 60 could wipe out 60,000. I must read this report because we don't know if someone in South Asia is using that technology. Will you kindly send me the URL? Thanks again.

April 6, 2013 - Focusing On Wildlife The Yangtze finless porpoise population has declined to a mere 1,000 individuals, making the endangered species even more rare than the wild giant panda, the 2012 Yangtze Freshwater Dolphin Survey Report reveals. The population in the mainstream of the Yangtze River was less than half of what a similar survey found six years ago, with food shortages and human disturbance such as increased shipping traffic major threats to their survival.... The study also found that the rare species annual rate of decline now stands at 13.7 percent, which means that the Yangtze finless porpoise could be extinct as early as the year 2025. http://focusingonwildlife.com/news/yangtze-finless-porpoise-population-nosedives-to-1000/

April 2, 2013 CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL Efforts to restore marine ecosystems that store vast amounts of carbon have received a boost with the launch of a new website that provides the latest blue carbon science and policy. The International Blue Carbon Initiative is a coordinated, global program focused on mitigating climate change through the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems. Coastal ecosystems are some of the most productive on Earth. They provide us with essential ecosystem services, such as coastal protection from storms and nursery grounds for fish. We also know that they provide another integral service – sequestering and storing “blue” carbon from the atmosphere and oceans and hence are an essential piece of the solution to global climate change.... http://thebluecarboninitiative.org/

More:: There are a couple of major pathways for CO2 to be removed from the atmosphere. One isplant respiration. Plants absorb CO2 during their growth, and use it along with sunlight and water and other nutrients, to grow. The carbon in the CO2 is converted into plant matter, such as blanches, leaves, roots, etc. It is important to note that this absorption of CO2 is only temporary in the big scheme of things, because when the plant dies and decomposes, the plant matter will go back to CO2 during the decomposition process. Therefore, in its natural state, this is in balance... as much CO2 is absorbed as is emitted when averaged over time (not including processes such as deforestation, which is not in balance, and so right now, CO2is net being emitted by plants due to deforestation). There are no other known methods to remove CO2 from the air on the scale that we are emitting it !!! Delete the scoop?

National Geographic, April 2013 Issue Weighing up to 1,200 pounds or more, the West Indian manatee looks something like a chubby dolphin or small whale, though it’s related to neither. (In fact, manatees share a common ancestor with elephants.) Manatees lack the blubber layer that allows whales to tolerate cold; in water below 68°F, they begin to weaken and die. The subspecies found in the United States is the Florida manatee, which disperses into coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico; in winter, when sea temperatures drop, they congregate inland at natural springs and other sources of warmth, including power plant discharge pipes.... http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/04/manatees/white-text
