                                   TAMING THE BLUE FRONTIER

                   Conservation Magazine, University of Washington

http://conservationmagazine.org/2009/04/taming-the-blue-frontier/

Ten thousand years ago, humans made the shift on land from hunting and gathering to farming. Now the same transformation is taking place at sea....

Many of today’s coastal fish farms have decimated habitat and spread disease into local fish populations. Making matters worse, fish farms represent a net drain on populations of wild fish, which are often caught just so they can be ground into feed for salmon and other species.

Despite these concerns, a shift is underway. Some members of the environmental community are concluding that widespread aquaculture must be pursued if we are to save the oceans and feed the planet. Aquaculture production must double by 2050 just to keep up with per capita demand. But merely scaling up current methods would only exacerbate the problems.

In other words, the world needs new, sustainable aquaculture practices, and it needs them fast. It took 10,000 years for domestic agriculture to transform the land, but viable ocean farming schemes must be developed in one one-hundredth of that time if they are to forestall the oceans’ demise. This urgency is spurring some leading environmentalists and scientists to lend their knowledge and support, instead of their opposition. In a recent lecture, the renowned marine ecologist Jeremy Jackson discussed the threat of overfishing and announced, “the most important scientific challenge we now face is how to make aquaculture ecologically sustainable.”... http://conservationmagazine.org/2009/04/taming-the-blue-frontier/

“Efforts to reduce sea louse numbers to levels which do not threaten the wild fish have failed dismally, despite the large-scale use of dangerous chemicals which ultimately threaten the valuable lobster, prawn and crab fisheries of the Highlands and Islands.

The federal government has implemented a plan for privatizing water resources that can then be used by private companies for fish farming, and its objective is to produce 20 million tons of fish annually through aquaculture. Privatizing the water in this way enables companies to intensively produce one type of fish in an area, without the fish having to compete with other species for food and space. Raising fish through aquaculture, however, requires the use of countless chemicals and has led to the displacement of small-scale fishermen and women. http://truth-out.org/news/item/27824-the-partitioning-of-brazil-s-ocean-and-rivers-threatens-small-scale-fishing-families

▶  THE END OF THE LINE - THE FUTURE OF NATURALLY GROWN FISH

Fish are the last wild food, but our oceans are being picked clean. Can farming fish take the place of catching them?

"Fish are the last wild food," says Paul Greenberg, author of Four Fish, one of the best books on the state of seafood. "And we're just realizing it."

But we may be coming to that realization too late, because it turns out that even the fathomless depths of the oceans have limits. The U.N. reports that 32% of global fish stocks are over-exploited or depleted and as much as 90% of large species like tuna and marlin have been fished out in the past half-century. Once-plentiful species like Atlantic cod have been fished to near oblivion, and delicacies like bluefin tuna are on an arc toward extinction. A recent report by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean found that the world's marine species faced threats "unprecedented in human history" — and overfishing is part of the problem. But submersible net pens, more than 150 feet apart, where ocean currents disperse waste, and fish swim and live in the closest possible approximation to their natural habitat. IT'S MUCH MORE PROFITABLE, AND EASIER TO CONTROL FISH PRODUCTION CONFINED IN SMALL CONTAINERS.  BUT FISH STAY HEALTHY  AND POPULATIONS FLOURISH BY BEING  IN THEIR OWN NATURAL OPEN, HEALTHY OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS.

WHEN CONFINED, CAGED, ENSLAVED,  MORE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS AND PESTICIDES ARE NEEDED TO CONTROL LICE AND DISEASE PUTTING QUANTITY OVER QUALITY ... AND THAT PRESENTS A HIGHLY LIKELY-HOOD OF DEVASTATION TO BOTH OCEAN AND HUMAN HEALTH....AS IN ALL CONFINED ANIMAL FACTORY FARMING....

pdjmoo's insight:

CAN WE DOMESTICATE WILD FISH -- AND SHOULD WE?'

Fish Swim Freely In the Ocean, Creating A Crucial bio ecosystem that

supports itself and the planet.  When the ocean is out of balance, so is the planet...and it is playing a major part in climate change.

Factory-Farming Fish in cramped, almost motionless quarters, fed by humans with a limited diet,  bred not by natural selection as they would in the wild, with the antibiotics and pesticides for lice that must be used when raised in confined cages in large quantities, should be thought through very carefully.

Another huge animal corporate factory farming business looms where the bottom-line drives decisions (Corporate trawlers have already emptied out and wrecked our oceans) and, as with the mega pig and chicken factory farms, where profits override the welfare and health of the animals "produced" for human consumption, here we have NO regulations, NO Oversight, NO labeling in place.

So... what are we eating?  Have we simply sacrificed our oceans for another huge global corporate business that writes its' own laws and keeps us all on the glowing public relations wheel until we have completely ravaged the environment, nature, and her natural, crucial biodiversity to the point of extinction and humans get sicker and sicker along with the planet? Deforestation, poisoning of our soils, water and food, massive extinction of our animals and wildlife...all for the bottom line, are contributing to climate change..remember this.  Perhaps, this time, we can get ahead of the game and create a truly sustainable, legal value-based practice that is for the good of all species on this planet, not just for Wall Street @pdjmoo

New USA Navy Permit Would Allow Harm To Millions of Marine Animals

More than 31 million instances of harm are anticipated

WASHINGTON--(ENEWSPF)--January 29 - A proposed rule to be published in Thursday’s Federal Register would permit the Navy to harm marine mammals in U.S. waters on more than 31 million separate instances between 2014-2019. The National Marine Fisheries Service authored the draft rule granting the Navy’s request for authorization to harass, injure, and kill whales and dolphins as part of its testing and training exercises along the Atlantic coast, in the Gulf of Mexico, and in waters off of Southern California and Hawaii. The estimated level of harm is 200% greater than previously requested permits to “take” marine mammals.

“We’re talking about a staggering and unprecedented amount of harm to more than 40 species of marine mammals that should give any federal agency involved, be it the Navy or the National Marine Fisheries Service, pause,” said Zak Smith, attorney with NRDC’s marine mammal project. “NMFS has been charged by Congress to protect these mammals, not sanction their deaths.  Giving the Navy the green light to harm marine mammals 31 million times is completely counter to NMFS mission and common sense.”

This is unacceptable! How many must die before the Navy admits the harm they are doing!

Nearly one-third of CO2 emissions due to human activities enters the world’s oceans. By reacting with seawater, CO2 increases the water’s acidity, which may significantly reduce the calcification rate of such marine organisms as corals and mollusks, resulting in the potential loss of ecosystems.

“An entire bio-climatic zone, the high Arctic, may disappear. Polar bears and the other highly adapted organisms cannot move further north, so they may go extinct. We risk losing several species forever,” said Hans Meltofte of Aarhus University, chief scientist of the report.

Halibut stocks continue to decline amid concerns

As expected, there will be fewer halibut available for fishermen to catch this year -- an 18 percent reduction to 33 million pounds, split among fisheries along the West Coast, British Columbia and Alaska.

Driving the decreases: Pacific halibut stocks continue a decade-long decline, fish are smaller than they should be at age, and, most troubling, scientists believe they have overestimated the halibut biomass for years.

CORAL REEFS SUFFER AS THE RELENTLESS HUNT FOR SHARK FINS TAKE ITS TOLL.
The rampant overfishing of sharks, often solely for their fins, is causing a damaging chain reaction that could significantly degrade coral reef systems, a decade-long Australian-led study has found. "The result of this is that the whole food chain is being thrown out of whack." ... creating a collapse of the food chain.

MIDWAY - a short film by Chris Jordan - Do We Have The Courage?

On Midway Atoll, a remote cluster of islands more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent, the detritus of our mass consumption surfaces in an astonishing place: inside the stomachs of thousands of dead baby albatrosses. The nesting chicks are fed lethal quantities of plastic by their parents, who mistake the floating trash for food as they forage over the vast polluted Pacific Ocean.

For me, kneeling over their carcasses is like looking into a macabre mirror. These birds reflect back an appallingly emblematic result of the collective trance of our consumerism and runaway industrial growth.

Like the albatross, we first-world humans find ourselves lacking the ability to discern anymore what is nourishing from what is toxic to our lives and our spirits. Choked to death on our waste, the mythical albatross calls upon us to recognize that our greatest challenge lies not out there, but in here. http://www.midwayfilm.com/
