During an interview with “The Breakfast Club” Monday morning, Angela Yee asked the Democratic candidate what she always has in her purse. “Hot sauce,” Clinton answered. “Yeah.” The possible Democratic Party nominee went on to say, “Now listen, I want you to know that people are going to see this and say, ‘She’s pandering to black people,'” What DOES hot sauce got to do with it? Does #HotSauceMatter?

WE can't save, educate or job income ourselves out of the economic and financial history from which our poverty springs. Structural and historical inequality has left Blacks with fewer assets than whites. Blacks in the top 10 percent have an average wealth of only $350,000 to the $1,200,000 of whites at the same income level. Across income groups, whites average $8 of wealth for every $1 owned by Blacks and Latinos. We need to devise wholly new approaches to wealth distribution that at once honor private property and family rights, while also putting to better use collective national assets.

What are the metrics which dictate, demonstrate and evidence our collective poverty ?

 about Dr. Darity
Darity’s research focuses on inequality by race, class and ethnicity, stratification economics, schooling and the racial achievement gap, North-South theories of trade and development, skin shade and labor market outcomes, the economics of reparations, the Atlantic slave trade and the Industrial Revolution, the history of economics, and the social psychological effects of exposure to unemployment.

He is the Samuel DuBois Cook Professor of Public Policy, African and African American Studies, and Economics and the director of the Duke Consortium on Social Equity at Duke University. He served as chair of the Department of African and African American Studies and was the founding director of the Research Network on Racial and Ethnic Inequality at Duke.

He was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (2011-2012) at Stanford, a fellow at the National Humanities Center (1989-90) and a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors (1984). He received the Samuel Z. Westerfield Award in 2012 from the National Economic Association, the organization's highest honor. He is a past president of the National Economic Association and the Southern Economic Association. In collaboration with Dr. Darrick Hamilton of the New School for Social Science Research, Dr. Darity formulated proposed an “interesting possible solution to address wealth disparities,” according to this Huffington Post blog. “Baby bonds” would mature in federally managed investment accounts until the beneficiary reached 18. Youth could have up to $60,000 to jumpstart their lifelong financial stability and help decrease wealth disparity in the U.S.

The National Asset Scorecard and Communities of Color (NASCC) project is conducted by Duke University’s Research Network on Racial and Ethnic Inequality. The researchers are led by William Darity, Jr, at Duke University and Darrick Hamilton at The New School. The NASCC research team – with expertise in survey design, analysis of group differences in asset accumulation and debt burden, and general patterns of ethnic/racial group inequality, – was assembled to conduct the investigation and analyze the data generated from the study. The study is intrinsically multidisciplinary; members of the team represent the following fields: statistics, economics, sociology, political science, ethnic studies, and urban planning.  NASCC published its landmark report, " Umbrellas Don’t Make it Rain: Why Studying and Working Hard Isn’t Enough for Black Americans " of which Dr. Darity is a co-author.
Dr. Darity has been an OUR COMMON GROUND voice since 2009. We welcome him back to our microphone.

This week we discuss the political future of Black Americans in the era of a imperialist Executive and Legislative government. The critical question is not how we react to the fascism that has embedded itself but how we plan to organize our resistance and survival. There are some who say we have been here before. No,THIS is very different AND WILL be totally destructive to any viable Black empowerment strategies . They are bent on a strategy that will destroy the vulnerable infrastructure that keeps us from drowning. We talk with Pascal about preservation and building.

Pascal  Robert (pronounced Ro-Bear like Stephan Colbert) is: A Blogger who loves all things politics. SHEER political independent; unafraid to slay the most sacred cows of ideological orthodoxy from the Left, or the Right and one who enjoys global affairs and aspects of pop culture. In all ways he is a child of the Haitian Revolution. Pascal Robert has been known for years to the online world as THOUGHT MERCHANT.

What constitutes a police state? Nearly everything around you or you read in "real" news.

 1. Indefinite military detentions of U.S. citizens.
 2. Targeting U.S. citizens for killing.
 3. Arresting witnesses for recording police actions.

These have become legal under US and local law. Anywhere else in the world, this would be considered a militarized take over of a society and its citizens by police and called a 'police state'.

Policymakers are not discussing or debating these issues in Congress, the State House or City Council. The consequences for what it means to be a Black American is deadly.

How do we unravel the laws, and bring democracy to policing in this country to eliminate the killing of Black men and women in there homes and on our streets?

 about Duchess Harris
Duchess Harris is an African American academic, author, and legal scholar. She is professor and chair of American studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, specializing in Black feminism, U.S. law, and African American political movements.

Her book, "Black Feminist Politics from Kennedy to Obama", was published by Palgrave MacMillan in 2009, and with Bruce Baum she co-edited Racially Writing the Republic: Racists, Race Rebels, and Transformations of American Identity, published by Duke University Press in 2009.

"Black Lives Matter", is a book about the Black Lives Matter movement aimed at middle school students. Harris says she feels that the book is necessary because she has seen that young people are just not getting any kind of discussions about race in their curricula. Of the book, Professor Harris or Duchess, says, “The outcome of being afraid is illiteracy,” says Harris. “I laugh with my math colleagues; they don’t have students who show up without having taken algebra.”

Harris became involved in the project when local educational publisher ABDO asked her to read through a commissioned book in which journalist Sue Bradford Edwards had analyzed Ferguson. Harris liked the analysis so much that she asked to be in on the project. She says that the book is not meant to be used as a textbook. Rather, it is part of a series by ABDO that will examine the background of various current and historical events, of which the Black Lives Matter movement is only a part. “My hope is [the book] is used in classrooms 6 to 12, and that it sparks discussion and dialogue,” she says. “I would love it so much if this were officially adopted as curriculum in the Twin Cities. That’s my dream.” - Duchess Harris

 AGENTIC
The capacity for human beings to make choices in the world. HUMAN AGENCY We see the world as agents of change. We believe that we have choice over our actions and we strive to enable others to make informed, responsible decisions.”

Recently, Dr. Curry wrote in his persistent advocacy of Black males in America, "The reoccurring structure of Black males coping with their rape is to accept its impossibility and imagine themselves as agentic. We need psychologists and social workers in these communities willing to treat these boys as victims , and theorists willing to engage female perpetrated rape beyond the idea of sexual initiation." In the context of all of us as victims of racial attack, we ask whether any of us can imagine ourselves as agentic and if such a preposition may be impeded by inherent fallacies.

Dr. Curry always brings opportunities FOR "transformative discourse". He will be joining us once again on OUR COMMON GROUND with Janice Graham.

Kesha Beale's curator insight, November 26, 2016 9:26 PM
As we are a few weeks post election, I see many folks, black and white speaking of fear of what the president-elect may institute.  Some are in states if depression, and one was even hospitalized for a nervous breakdown.   I try to encourage others as much as possible.  As a black woman, I've encountered much in my short life, and I refuse to walk in fear.  Walking in fear means that the opposition has won.  I encourage others, instead of walking in fear, mobilize.  Become more active in your community, save money, get involved politically, attend city council meetings, etc.  It's time to lock and load (literally, financially, politically, spiritually), not to become immobilized.

That is what Tuesday forecast for the remaining 21st Century. More apartheid throughout the planet, based in the United States of America. Democracy was good, as long as it allowed Majority Rule, now, a new system has to accommodate white minority rule. Its not personal, its existential." - Dr. James Taylor

The 2016 Democratic Convention in Philadelphia is over. It was the greatest parade of marketing propaganda we have seen in our lifetime. Hillary proclaimed, “Your cause is my cause,”. But dissatisfied delegates in the hall, the Bernie people saw her rhetoric for what it was: insincere and opportunistic.

They have sacrificed nothing to make us stronger together. It was a great party of political promises, filling the tab, of making debt. Will they pay? They sold us on the idea that we must elect someone is sane and competent. How empty is that for our political future.

There IS so much at stake, and once again the Democrats provide us no answer. Tonight one of our Unfiltered Interlocutor, Pascal Robert, joins us to sort it out and talk about just where we are inside the theatre.

The urgent need to demand justice, transparency and accountability. They are configuring a dishonest discourse and smudging the narrative. We must be clear about our own. A robot with a bomb? Shooting into a car with a child in the back seat ? Cold-bloodied executions ? Entering jail alive but not so on the exit ? A 12 year old gunned down in a park in broad daylight ! We join the families of those who grieve this Sunday, they are all victims of America's police state.

We declare our collective wounds and injuries in the wake of the killing of more than 1, 000 American citizens by police. This week we witnessed once again the cold-bloodied execution of our Brother, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. WE ARE OUTRAGED. We are outraged that there is no accountability, the government, government officials and elected officials show limited concern of accountability or justice. We are citizens and should no fear for the safety of our children and ourselves. We don't believe that a peaceful protest about the value of our presence cannot be highjacked by one act of violence. We reject that the killing of police is a rationale response to the legitimate outrage of the killing of Black men and women under the cover of law and authority.

BEFORE TULSA < > BEFORE ROSEWOOD THERE WAS WILMINGTON Most folks are familiar with massacres that took place in Tulsa and Rosewood regarding US history but not Wilmington. This incident is barely mentioned and has been omitted from most history books. It was not until 2006, after the North Carolina General Assembly published a report on it, that the tragedy become known to the public. It was supposed to be a secret, and it was for over 100 years.

The Wilmington Massacre was a bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob with the support of the North Carolina Democratic Party on November 10, 1898 in the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. I

The film details this little-known, bloody massacre against an all Black township in North Carolina in 1898. The descendants of the victims of the event are asking for legal action in regards to compensation / reparations.

Race has frequently been a heated source of debate and protest, with shootings of unarmed black men and the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody bringing intense attention to the role that race plays in black Americans’ interactions with police. But although these events have brought necessary light to instances of misconduct within law enforcement, they shouldn’t blind us to a more subtle and more common forms of racism that shape the lives of black people everyday. Young Black men and boys are absent these discussions in consideration of how race affects they are perceived and how they are prepared to defend themselves in a culture that consistently views them as dangerous and less than, even in their own communities.

It is particularly heartbreaking to see young boys discussing the role that racism plays in their lives—Maddox, a participant in a NYT documentary at only 10 years old, “I want people to know that I’m perfectly fine, and I’m not going to hurt anybody or do anything bad.” Even more upsetting is the knowledge that this is a reality lived by countless Black men, young and old, throughout the United States.

ABOUT Dr. Tommy J. Curry Professor of Philosophy, Texas A&M University Tommy J. Curry’s work spans across the various fields of philosophy, jurisprudence, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies. Though trained in American and Continental philosophical traditions, Curry’s primary research interests are in Critical Race Theory and Africana Philosophy. In Critical Race Theory, Curry looks at the work of Derrick Bell and his theory of racial realism as an antidote to the proliferating discourses of racial idealism that continue to uncritically embrace liberalism through the appropriation of European thinkers as the basis of racial reconciliation in the United States.

He was told by the DEA that there should be no drug enforcement in rich White areas. And he told. After leaving the force, Fogg spent his retirement advocating for greater protections for officers who expose internal corruption within law enforcement agencies.

He advocates for the civil rights of citizens who are in fear of police misconduct and brutality. Mr. Fogg serves as a mentor for our youth through his work with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) Fogg owns the trademark “Bigots with Badges” following the publication of a story in the New York Post that featured that headline and told the story of Fogg’s years as a marshal and his lawsuit against the Justice Department

And now, he wants to take lifelong fight for justice to Capitol Hill. He is one of six Democrats vying for the party nomination to replace outgoing Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D) in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District.
