OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

"What has caused Black people, after almost 400 years in North America, and after 150 years of emancipation from slavery, to be mired in a social condition that is becoming more debilitating by the day? One need not sound off the various statistics available illustrating the evisceration of whatever illusory semblance of progress Blacks have made, particularly since the post movement era after the 1960s."

The decision to execute William Van Poyck, who in his writings from death row has chronicled our penal system’s depravity, is one more footnote to our perverted belief in the regeneration of society through violence.
OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

"And, as if we were not drenched in enough human blood, we murder prisoners—most of them poor people of color who have been locked up for more than a decade. The United States believes in regeneration through violence. We have carried out blood baths on foreign soil and on our own land for generations in the vain quest of a better world. And the worse it gets, the deeper our empire sinks under the weight of its own decay and depravity, the more we kill. "

Julianne Malveaux: At Last | OUR COMMON GROUND Informed Truth and Resistance | Scoop.it
by Julianne Malveaux When Beyonce Knowles sang the Etta James song "At Last" at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration, the song could have had several meanings.  At last we have an African American President?
OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

"During President Obama’s first term, his inattention to the African American community was understandable, though not acceptable.  He was busy straddling lines, generating compromise, and leaving a legacy of health care reform.  African Americans were patient in the hope that “as last” African Americans would get recognition in his second term.  After all, as a lame duck President, he has much to gain, and little to lose in rewarding his most loyal constituency.  At last some of us have our disappointment confirmed.  Our President’s inaugural speech mentioned every community except the African American community."

“As of March 2013, GAO’s analysis showed that of the five goals for which primary data on results are available, one shows progress and four show no progress,” the report by the Government Accountability Office found. For instance, the GAO noted that there’s actually been an increase in HIV transmissions among drug users and drug-related deaths, as well as no difference in the prevalence of drug use among teens."

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

"Here’s the game they’re running: They’ve convinced America that if we give the rich enough money, they’ll use some of that money to create jobs for the poor and middle class. Now, I don’t claim to be an intellectual giant, and I haven’t spent more than 30 minutes studying Economics, but it doesn’t take a great mind to understand that demand fuels supply, not vice versa. If I made my living selling Gucci Bags, for example, I don’t care how much money you give me, I’m not going to produce any additional Gucci Bags if I'm being forced to sell them in a homeless shelter. It wouldn’t make sense, because no one has the money to purchase them. The only way that you’re going to get me to hire people to produce Gucci Bags is if you gave that money to the people in the shelter so they’d have the money to buy my merchandise."

Does Feminism Have a Race Problem?

Does Feminism Have a Race Problem? | OUR COMMON GROUND Informed Truth and Resistance | Scoop.it
In response to critiques to feminism's lack of spaces for diversity and intersectionality, writer Loretta J. Ross is branding herself as a "justice feminism." But what exactly is this?
OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

"So what exactly is a justice feminist?

According to Ross, justice feminism does not center on achieving gender equality because, "who says what men have is what women want or need?" Instead, justice feminism tries to achieve justice and rights for both men and women. Rather than try to achieve what men have in society, Ross argues that feminists should be trying to "change the rules of the game rather than seeking our own equal opportunity to oppress."

AP News : Lauryn Hill gets 3 months for failing to pay taxes | OUR COMMON GROUND Informed Truth and Resistance | Scoop.it

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill stood in federal court Monday and compared her experience in the music business to the slavery her ancestors endured before a judge sentenced her to three months in prison for failing to pay about $1 million in taxes over the past decade.

"I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them," Hill said before U.S. Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo. "I had an economic system imposed on me."

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

In addition to serving three months in prison, Hill must pay a $60,000 fine. After she is released from prison, she will be under parole supervision for a year, the first three months of which will be spent under home confinement.

The 37-year-old South Orange resident had faced a maximum sentence of one year each on three counts of failing to file taxes. Her attorney had sought probation, arguing that Hill's charitable works, her family circumstances and the fact she paid back the taxes she owed should merit consideration.

OUR COMMON GROUND Omnibus's insight:

"Mr. Obama is fearful of these State Defense Forces, in that he does not have control of said forces, and with the U.S. Military stretched to near breaking from multiple deployments and theatre actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, these State military forces would be under the direct command and authority of the Governors in which states have said forces. In essence, the Governors would have “de facto control” of the United States.

The two Governors leading this move are: Tim Pawlenty, Governor of Minnesota; and Rick Perry, Governor of Texas. Both of these State Governors stated they have: “…deep fear the President is destroying their Nation.”
