This project was conceived by the Director of Carleton University's School of Information Technology.  It is envisaged as a space temporarily transformed into a haunted house replete with hacked hardware objects (i.e., animatronics) and digital visualizations that render an interactive and immersive visitor experience.

Objects or “props” made for the 3H project would be produced using off-the-shelf and low-cost components in addition to Arduino and other open source hardware.  The making of props would be well-documented and open to sharing and user-based mods (modifications).

Museomix

Museomix | Ottawa Maker Movement - Ideas for Community Engagement and Programming | Scoop.it

Part mashup, part make-a-thon, MuseoMix is a novel initiative to engage a diverse mix of the museum "community" to re-imagine whole new museum experiences. During these first 3 days, we mix our ideas and our skills to create a museum that is no longer a cathedral, a museum that we imagine as:

- an open museum where each one has a place

- a networked museum engaging with multiple communities

- a museum as lab, live and evolving with its users

We all gather, active museum visitors, creators, artists, coders, pros, free agents and amateurs, to give life to this museum, to play and demonstrate together that a new visiting experience is possible!

OttawaMakerMovement's insight:

Thanks to an anonymous @MakerFaireOTT Twitter follower we learned about a wonderful program called Hacker Scouts. What a great motto:  Make – Learn – Hack – Build – Rule the World.

Hacker Scouts, a new youth program, began in Oakland, CA to address the needs of a progressive maker community and the aspiration to help our children develop skills in the areas they are truly interested in, abilities that would allow them to dream big and create big.

3D Printing to Promote Artistic Expression

3D Printing to Promote Artistic Expression | Ottawa Maker Movement - Ideas for Community Engagement and Programming | Scoop.it

3D printing is more often than not associated with the advancement of personal manufacturing rather than a tool that could be adopted by the artistic community.  The idea would be to encourage local artists, sculptors and other creatives to embrace 3D printing as a technological tool capable of making artistic works.

One suggestion would be to partner with a creative local art gallery and host a special exhibition dedicated to 3D printed art and creative works. This link provides a great example of the quality of 3D printed art: http://fabbaloo.com/blog/2012/2/29/the-3d-printed-art-of-robert-geshlider.html

Community Pop-up Makerspaces

Community Pop-up Makerspaces | Ottawa Maker Movement - Ideas for Community Engagement and Programming | Scoop.it

Inspired by The Makery in New York City, a series of pop-up makerspaces or open workshops could be held in various neighbourhood and community centres, schools and libraries.

These hands-on workshops would be primarily directed at youth and introduce them to the fun, creativity and experimentation of "making".

Young Makers Camp

Young Makers Camp | Ottawa Maker Movement - Ideas for Community Engagement and Programming | Scoop.it

This idea is inspired by the Young Makers Program which connects young people (typically ages 12-17) with adult mentors and fabricators to create opportunities for kids to dream up and develop projects for exhibition at Maker Faire each year.

OttawaMakerMovement's insight:

The idea would be to integrate a Young Maker Camp stream into an existing Summer youth camp program in Ottawa.

The idea of a camp could also be designed to run in partnership with local Ottawa museums and art galleries.

Yes! You too can read your DNA or, if you prefer, test the DNA of take-out sushi with your very own Do-It-Yourself PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine. Check out http://openpcr.org/use-it/
