Special Issue: At what age should we put babies on a digital media diet? : The Digital Media Diet | OT mTool Kit | Scoop.it
Carol Leynse Harpold's insight:

I have long enjoyed The Digital Media Diet that can bring research and perspective on young children's learning in the digital age. They bring thought provoking questions and research on the subject.

In my workshops and posts I have referenced the guidelines of the American Pediatric Academy for screen time for children- resulting in interesting discussions and reflections on exposure and use. In this article The Digital Media Diet addresses screen time guidelines and provides a developmental perspective on that. This information is an important perspective for OT's and teachers to review and consider as we use the technology for children with developmental challenges.

An interesting read from The Digital Media Diet, thanks for keeping us all informed!

Over the years I have discussed keyboarding practice with many parents. One suggestion I often made was to use different keyboarding programs to keep the skill and drill novel.  Hmm..., think 32 potential keyboarding options provides enough novelty???

Carol Leynse Harpold's insight:

Winston S. Chen, developer of Voice Dream Reader app, shares the personal experience of how a person with dyslexia speed reads using his highlighting and text to speech in a somewhat different manner. Read Winston's interview and explanation of how this works for this unique case. Or is it unique? Maybe it could be more typical for some dyslexics?

Voice Dream Reader is one of my favorite and highly recommended apps for reading. Winston Chen has developed this app to a level comparable to no other iOS app that supports struggling readers.

For middle, high school and college students this is the app I recommend to access text.

What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades - NYTimes.com

What’s Lost as Handwriting Fades - NYTimes.com | OT mTool Kit | Scoop.it

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/06/03/science/whats-lost-as-handwriting-fades.html?_r=2&referrer ;

Carol Leynse Harpold's insight:

Maria Konnikova, in her article "Whats Lost as Handwriting Fades", reviews several research articles which supports the importance of the mechanical process of writing and letter formation as it relates to reading and literacy. Implications for handwriting instruction, mechanical writing versus word processing are introduced from the research sited.

This bring many questions regarding approaches we use in OT or AT for students and whether the apps available for handwriting provide the learning and opportunities needed for our students.

And then again, is it another " it depends"  based on the students specific needs, skills, task and environment?

This is an interesting read with links to the articles, some which are free .
