The Failure Of Social Media

The Failure Of Social Media | osama abulhasan | Scoop.it

Social Media doesn't work for the vast majority of small businesses.

That was the main message in the USA Today article titled, Study: Social media a bust for small businesses, published on April 17th, 2013. From the news item:"About 61% of small businesses don't see any return on investment on their social-media activities, according to a survey released Tuesday from Manta, a social network for small businesses. Yet, almost 50% say they've increased their time spent on social media, and only 7% have decreased their time. What businesses are trying to get out of social media: 36% said their goal was to acquire and engage new customers, 19% said to gain leads and referrals, and 17% said to boost awareness. Facebook was most cited as the hardest to maintain social-media platform, according to the survey." There is a big lesson in this data...

What you want from social media may be very different from what it is.

I agree gamification of a boring task is possible, but doesn't scale well. My thought would be to redesign the task so it is less boring. One way to do that is reduce the task down and inject more game elements.

Another way to remake a boring task is to find out why its BORING. Everything is better WITH other people. I'm Riffing Andre W Chen's excellent How To Create A Social Product on Scenttrail Marketing right now: http://www.scenttrail.com/riffing-andre-w-chen-how-to-design-successful-social-products/

Relevant because Andre discusses the feedback loops needed to keep engagement across different segments and personas. Same applies to gamifying a boring task.

Facebook Is Ending the Free Ride

Facebook Is Ending the Free Ride | osama abulhasan | Scoop.it

Facebook pulled the best practical joke of the internet age: the company convinced countless celebrities, bands, and "brands" that its service was the best way to reach people with eyeballs and money. Maybe it is! But now that companies have taken the bait, Facebook is holding the whole operation hostage.

Update: To be perfectly clear, none of this will affect the average Facebook user's ability to freely use Facebook—only entities that use Facebook as a promotional tool.

A source professionally familiar with Facebook's marketing strategy, who requested to remain anonymous, tells Valleywag that the social network is "in the process of" slashing "organic page reach" down to 1 or 2 percent. This would affect "all brands"—meaning an advertising giant like Nike, which has spent a great deal of internet effort collecting over 16 million Facebook likes, would only be able to affect of around a 160,000 of them when it pushes out a post. Companies like Gawker, too, rely on gratis Facebook propagation for a huge amount of their audience. Companies on Facebook will have to pay or be pointless....

Republicans have a major demographic problem. And it’s only going to get worse. | osama abulhasan | Scoop.it
2016 will be a tough election for the GOP to win. 2024 might be impossible.

BY CHRIS CILLIZZA
April 22 at 2:56 pm

It's no secret that Republicans have a demographic problem when it comes to national elections.

In 2012, roughly nine in every ten people who voted for Mitt Romney were white --even as the white vote continued its steady decline as a percentage of the overall electorate.   He got crushed among Hispanics and African American voters.

Writing at Commentary magazine on Monday, former Bush Administration official Pete Wehner concludes:

It’s an undeniable empirical truth that the GOP coalition is shrinking, and it’s shrinking in the aftermath of two fairly decisive defeats, with the latter coming against a president whose policies were judged by many Americans to have been failures. Which means the Republican task isn’t simply to nominate a candidate who can fire up the base; it is to find principled conservative leaders who can win over voters who are not now voting for the GOP at the presidential level.

The problem Wehner -- and many other senior strategists and some elected officials within the GOP -- identify is not only incredibly serious as it relates to the party's ability to win national election but is also almost certain to get worse unless something big changes. As in, the 2016 presidential election will be a tough one for Republicans to win given the demographic changes in the country but it won't be nearly as difficult for them as the 2024 or 2028 elections could be.

In evolving markets neither the broadest nor deepest is in trouble, but the middle market is withering.
