Descision diagrem sharing how someone (Al from Wales (aka r3dux.org) enrolled on the current Stanford AI MOOC sees the balance between the price ($zero) and the costs ... while he loves the concept/ambition/teachers his diagram shows some of the downside. (Should make you smile/laugh, but with a hint of wince about it).

OER@AVU - OER out of Africa!

OER@AVU - OER out of Africa! | ORIOLE project | Scoop.it

There has been an interesting discussion about OER-imperialism on the oer-forum@lists.esn.org.za discussion list.

The African Virtual Univeristy notes that their AVU OER collection http://oer.avu.org  is being used by Merlot and is accessed worldwide in 179 coutries. The top countries accessing AVU include Brazil, the United States, India, Phillipines, Kenya, France, Nigeria, Morrocco, Portugal and Canada.

So OER is not a one-way street. :-)

Launch of the UNESCO Open Educational Resources Platform, Paris, 1st Nov | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

Launch of the UNESCO Open Educational Resources Platform, Paris, 1st Nov | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization | ORIOLE project | Scoop.it

The OER Platform will offer selected UNESCO publications as fully-licensed OERs. Sounds impressive:

"The first UNESCO publication to be made available on the OER Platform is the UNESCO Model Curricula for Journalism Education. The Curricula has been very successfully adapted by more than 60 university journalism schools in over 50 countries. We have agreements with the journalism schools of the Polytechnic of Namibia and the University of Namibia to share their adaptations of the UNESCO curricula as OERs on the Platform."

Flyer and further info at http://tinyurl.com/3hzt6mx

The Launch will be live-streamed as follows:

Floor )original language) - mms://stream.unesco.org/live/room_10_floor.wmv

OER in the field: institutions solving problems openly

OER in the field: institutions solving problems openly | ORIOLE project | Scoop.it

What I particularly liked about JISC's David Kernohan exploration of OER was his tying in of OER to what it means to be an academic (and not simply a new buzz thing):

'Open academic practice draws a link between OER, open access to research outputs and research data, and the general practice of "professing" (in the late-medieval sense) a subject, by what we now call a "public intellectual". By seeing OER as a component of what is traditionally expected of academia, rather than as a new imposition, we are arguing from a much stronger foundation based on what many in the sector see as their primary motivation – to explain to people the importance and relevance of the subject specialisms they have devoted many years to understanding.'

iTunes U: Corporate Channel of Free Educational Resources

This short paper was presented at ALT-C 2011 at University of Leeds, UK, on 8 September 2011. Terese Bird is a SCORE Fellow with Open University, UK.

Sometimes it's hard to make sense of slides if you weren't at the presentation, but these ones by Terese Bird are easy to read, and show the early findings of her research into the use of iTunes U as an OER channel for universities. Interesting use of Twitter for data gathering.

Open Access publication | What makes a successful health system? | ORIOLE project | Scoop.it

Why do some low and middle income countries manage to achieve good health outcomes while others fail? What factors drive improvements in the health system and in access to primary health care? How can we act on the social determinants of health in cash-strapped economies?  This new edition of Good health at low cost 25 years on draws on a series of new case studies. Chapters, podcasts and policy briefings. A rich resource.
