Diversity of Experience Promotes Innovation - An Interview

Diversity of Experience Promotes Innovation - An Interview | organizational transformation | Scoop.it
Part 1 of a series on neuroscience and innovation Humans are animals.  While we like to think we're captains of our destiny, we're far more driven by instinct than we know.  In many ways, we’re just glorified apes, even in business.

"

Q:  So our brains create patterns to make sense of things.  That’s an efficient way to deal with our environments, right?

Janet:  The great news is that this works marvelously most of the time.  The downside is that we sometimes automate patterns that may have limited utility or which are outmoded hand-me-downs from another generation or set of circumstances. Also, our neural patterns are constricted by our unique circumstances and by what we’ve paid attention to.  There’s way more data in the environment than ever makes it onto our neural maps."

craig daniels's insight:

How easy it is for us to think we have found the answer to innovating within our business or nonprofit, after-all if it works once won't it work twice.

According to Neuroscience the more we add diversity to the equation the more the weeds of innovation will grow. The more we meet people who's experiences are different from our own the more the possibilities and combinations our mind has to play with.

It's not rocket science, it's neuroscience. So what are we waiting for try the blueberries mixed in your tomato salad.

Is Your Business Ok Being A Follower In Innovation?

Is Your Business Ok Being A Follower In Innovation? | organizational transformation | Scoop.it
Let’s say you’re at a cocktail party, and someone asks what you do for a living. Many people might answer “finance” or “marketing”. But…how many would answer “innovation”?

"The reality is that most organizations consider innovation a spare-time activity. Many people may be involved part-time (or overtime) on “innovation” work – but when the calendars get busy, innovation is the first priority to drop. Innovation is seen as non-core, a nice-to-have."

craig daniels's insight:

Where does your small business fall in the rush to innovate? Do you have at least one full-time employee whose job is Innovation? Maye you're stuck in the dreaded innovation as an after thought club that most small businesses find themselves.

Today is a great day to review where your business stands in the rush to innovate, is it important to you or are you ok with things as they are?

Having either one person or a team dedicated to innovation may be an unsettling thought and at least in the beginning an expense without a clear return but the alternative is stagnation.

Ask yourself, am I ok with my business role in the market being one best categorized as "follow the leader."  If you are, don't bother reading the rest of the post.

MIT Media Lab's Influence Grows - FT.com

MIT Media Lab's Influence Grows - FT.com | organizational transformation | Scoop.it
I start to walk across a street in a city of the near future. An autonomous electric car is gliding silently towards me, driving itself to pick up a group of passengers.

“We want to be anti-disciplinary – which means filling in the white space between disciplines,” he says. “City Science is a great example of something that brings together work from many fields across the lab. When you bring in kids who are interested in architecture, design, transport, energy, urban gardening, mobility and big data, you get a different way of looking at things.”

craig daniels's insight:

There is much innovation going on you may not even know about. At academic institutions huge sums of money and brain power are spent everyday to tackle the vast questions of society and business.

MIT Media Lab is just such a place where researchers are toiling day and night to innovate for the 21st century.

The Financial Times has put together a great overview of what's happening at the MIT Media Labs Footprint Grows.
