Maker Education and Social-Emotional Development - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein #makered | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it

"Maker education, when planned around skills acquisition, can enhance social-emotional development.

Self-Awareness: Making in all its forms requires a full range of skills including cognitive, physical, and affective skills. Given this need for multiple and diverse skill set, effective and successful making comes from an accurate assessment of one’s strengths and limitations as well as having optimism and confidence that challenges can be overcome within the making process. Example questions related to self-awareness and making include:

     * What strategies am I using to increase my awareness of my emotions and how they influence my performance during the making-related tasks?

     * What are my strengths given this particular making task?

     * What are my limitations and how can I use my strengths to overcome them? ..."

This this post includes an infographic which summarises areas where students can gain self-awareness when involved in maker projects in the classroom. While the piece focuses on maker education in the school classroom it's also applicable to higher education. The areas of social-emotional development highlighted here resonate with the ones we've seen students identify in their reflective blogs when we run our Doctor as Digital Teacher SSC where they design and develop a digital learning resource.

Maker education (often referred to as “Maker Ed”) is a new school of educational thought that focuses on delivering constructivist, project-based learning curriculum and instructional units to students. Maker education spaces can be as large as full high school workshops with high-tech tools, or as small and low-tech as one corner of an elementary classroom. A makerspace isn't just about the tools and equipment, but the sort of learning experience the space provides to students who are making projects.

I got to know Michael Matera and his world over the last few years as I’ve explored the idea of using video games and simulations in the classroom. He has always impressed with his work because, as a classroom teacher, Matera has spent a ton of time integrating interactive play, passion and purpose-driven instruction.

Along with being a full time teacher at University School of Milwaukee, Matera is also a nationally known presenter and international consultant of game-based learning. ASCD named him an Emerging Leader in 2015 for sharing his ideas for using accessible and gamified teaching methods as part of instruction. All while sharing his ideas and thoughts via mrmatera.com and @mrmatera. Matera is a guy who believes in #gbl and pulled it off with lots of success with actual, real live kids.

6 powerful strategies for Deeper Learning in your classroom

6 powerful strategies for Deeper Learning in your classroom | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it
In the U.S., millions of middle and high school students attend schools that don’t match the reality of their lives. By their teenage years, young people should be solving complex problems, thinking critically about tough concepts, and communicating their ideas effectively. Yet, our schools are organized to be lecture-based, encouraging students to simply memorize facts and follow rules.

In my new book, “Deeper Learning: How Eight Innovative Public Schools are Transforming Education in the Twenty-First Century,” I take you inside a growing movement that represents what should be the new normal. Deeper Learning is a set of student outcomes that includes mastery of essential academic content; thinking critically and solving complex problems; working collaboratively and communicating effectively; having an academic mindset, and being self-directed.

This more robust and responsive educational experience offers a new framework for educators and schools to rise to the challenge of preparing students for college, careers, and the world today. The eight schools profiled in my book are embracing Deeper Learning principles with six core strategies.

Building an Educational App? Read This First (EdSurge News) | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it
Over the next four years, nearly a billion students will enter middle and high school, and if recent projections are accurate, most of them will have a smartphone in their pocket. These students will decide what apps they use and when they use them, and could potentially take large parts of their education into their own hands.

Despite this potential, there are few break-out apps that cater directly to students. The education app charts are led by games and classroom tools, and the largest student-focused apps—Duolingo, Quizlet, and recently PhotoMath—only serve a thin slice of student needs, leaving huge potential for new entrants.

We’ve spent the last two years at Socratic studying how students learn with the Internet. In hopes of inspiring the development of more student-focused apps, we’d like to share some of our insights about how students use their phones while studying today.

Main points and some thoughts from Klassikka.

  1. Battery life is everything

  2. Photos are the quickest way to share content

  3. Students treat their phones like a tutor, not a textbook

  4. Today’s educational content is painful to consume on mobile devices

  5. Friends teach each other over chat

We are using already fourth school year OnEdu learning solution and going to start using next generation OnEdu 2.0 platform in next few weeks among first schools in the World and hope meet as platform users the most keypoints which @cjpedregal mentioned in his blog post. There is also good pings for publishers and learning material creators.

Also to keep in mind that Mobie Ltd. offers also Mobile Tablets for students which are great from k12 to University level. Students have been very happy with their hybrid solution like Mobie M11. Powerful Windows 10, easy to carry, good camera and battery life is for full day of study in University.

We think in Klassikka that OnEdu is the best solution out there and so is IMAILE.EU in it`s report where they compared 72 learning platforms in the World. OnEdu is on top 5 now in the World and is the only one from EU area.If interested more about report, ask @mobieoy

OnEdu is also only platform where publishers are creating html5 mobile friendly materials for students and OnEdu Social platform itself works like facebook to allowing students make groups and having conversations with you mate students.

OnEdu offers school large variation on publishing Mobile friendly Zine publications like school newspaper, teacher preparation publications, school guidebooks, safety booklets and what is most powerful for students, they can do it themselves! In @klassikka we have more than 50 different publication at the moment and that comes with extra costs in OnEdu learning platform.

Here is some school magazines created by students to look up.
