Mapping Twitter Topic Networks: From Polarized Crowds to Community Clusters

Mapping Twitter Topic Networks: From Polarized Crowds to Community Clusters | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it
People connect to form groups on Twitter for a variety of purposes. The networks they create have identifiable contours that are shaped by the topic being discussed, the information and influencers driving the conversation, and the social network structures of the participants.

Interesting article outlining different ways that crowds and conversations   take place on twitter. It identifies how there are at least six distinctive structures of social media crowds which form depending on:

-the subject being discussed

-the information sources being cited

-the social networks of the people talking about the subject, and

-the leaders of the conversation.

And how each has a different social structure and shape:

-divided

-unified

-fragmented

-clustered, and

-inward and outward hub and spokes.

Twitter: ¿para alumnos o para profesores?

Twitter: ¿para alumnos o para profesores? | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it

Teaching with Twitter – Please check your baggage at the door

Teaching with Twitter – Please check your baggage at the door | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it

How-to’s and link roundups on teaching with Twitter has been done many times before, but the topic is worth frequent revisiting and refreshing, especially in the context of the #FutureEd initiative and the Pedagogy Project by HASTAC Scholars.

The goal of this review is to help think through if, why, and how to use Twitter in our teaching and learning – especially for those who remain skeptical.

I really like this article because it is very effective at weighing the pros and cons of using twitter in the classroom.  Some of the supplemental links are also very helpful to look at and include content on how to teach with Twitter and how to avoid some of the pitfalls that can result from using Twitter in a classroom setting.   In general, I believe strongly in helping students to develop global competency (as we have discussed in class) and I believe that Twitter is one of the best and most convenient mediums to do this.  While I am slightly apprehensive about how and if it is even possible to use Twitter in an elementary school classroom I definitely see more potential in using it after reading this article.

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: 3 people & 3 ideas for using Twitter to share, discover, & connect with students | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it

Twitter (www.Twitter.com) is a great tool for sharing, discovering, and connecting with others who care about the same ideas and information. You can use Twitter right on your phone without downloading any software and even with just one teacher cell phone per class, contributions can be made and modeled anywhere, anytime. Twitter has become such a popular tool because it asks one question, "What's happening?" Answers must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web.
