Leadership styles in education – The Seven Secrets to New Age Leadership | #Business #CHANGE #LEARNing2LEARN | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it
The architect leader knows that the ability to create a nourishing and challenging environment for people to grow in is more important than any technical skill she can possess.

Continuous Improvement – The leader of tomorrow will regularly challenge old beliefs and be passionate about learning and about applying that learning in the real world. She will often ask my favorite question “Who is doing something differently then I am and what can I learn from them?”

The New Leader is Authentic. How and who you are is just as important as what you know! Hold yourself to the highest standards – don’t talk the talk unless you are prepared to walk the walk. Don’t expect of others what you don’t expect from your self. Be real, tell the truth. The leaders that are the most revered are those that let the light of who they are shine through in all they do. They are honest, forthright and clear.

Coach/Facilitator – A leader needs to be a coach not a commander. He needs to hold space open for things to happen. It is said that when leaders do their job properly people believe they have done it themselves. Leaders are there to help people see things from a different perspective, to provide questions that encourage learning and to help turn work experiences into learning experiences.

Our new leader is a Visionary. It’s clearly documented that visionary leaders are successful at mobilizing human potential. A vision provides focus. It’s a tool for aligning energy. Clear vision and purpose provide people with a framework from which to make decisions, it organizes action and effort.

In this new paper commissioned by the Ford Foundation, Barnett Berry makes the case for how a system of teacher leadership and learning can fuel deeper learning for all students. 

Here is what the paper tackles:

examines current reforms’ limitations and notes some promising emergent examples, (like Social Justice Humanitas Academy in LAUSD); summarizes 30 years of research about how teachers learn and lead (also drawing on stories of teachers CTQ has worked with since our founding in 1998); identifies three promising shifts that could be leveraged to create an effective system of teacher leadership and learning; and
describes next steps that stakeholders (including policymakers, USDOE, state education leaders, superintendents, and others) can take to advance teacher leadership toward a more equitable public education system.

It is a myth that we operate under a set of oppressive bureaucratic constraints. In reality, teachers have a great deal of autonomy in the work they chose to do in their classrooms. In most cases it is our culture that provides the constraints. For individual teachers, trying out new practices and pedagogy is risky business and both our culture, and our reliance on hierarchy, provide the ideal barriers for change not to occur. As Pogo pointed out long ago, “we have met the enemy and it is us.” http://www.cea-ace.ca/blog/brian-harrison/2013/09/5/stop-asking-permission-change

Educational psychology has focused on the concepts of learned helplessness and more currently growth-fixed mindsets as a way to explain how and why students give up in the classroom setting.  These ideas can also be applied to educators in this day of forced standardization, testing, scripted curriculum, and school initiatives.

THERE ARE THE TEACHERS THAT ARE WELL WORTH BEING RESPECTED FOR THEIR JOB DONE BUT THATS NOT EVERYONE AND SOME THAT ARE NOT SPEAKING THE SAME LANUAGE AS THE NORM ARE EASILY IGNORED ,PUSHED A SIDE OR DEEMED A PROBLEM AND THEN CREATIVE WAYS OF GETTING THEM REMOVED FROM TEACHING IS EMPLIMENTED AND DONE. THEREFORE IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE HEARD BUT LET WHAT IS BEING SAD LINE UP WITH THE TRUE TEACHING PRACTICES BECAUSE THINGS CAN BE SO BEAUTIFUL ON PAPER BUT IN REALITY SOME COULD CARELESS BUT IF DOCMENTED ITS BINDING SO MAY THERE BE A SYSTEM OF ACCOUNTABILITY. NOT JUST INTERNAL THRUTHE STATE AGENCIES ALONE.

WE OFTEN WONDERED HOW WE WAS SUPPOSE TO BE WILLINGLY SERVANTS WITH JOYFUL ATTITUDE UNTIL WE REALISED SOME OF THE NEGATIVE HAPPENED INTENTIONALY AND AS SUCH IT REMOVED SOME OF THE NEGATIVE THAT WE WOULD NEVER OWN UP TO BUT IS SOME WHERE WITHIN US AND EITHER WE KNOW IT BUT YET DENY IT OR DENY IT BUT KNOW IT IS THERE. BUT THERE ARE THINGS THAT OCCUR THAT WILL MAKE A NEGATIVE LOOKING SITUATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE WITH U/WE REVEAL THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE THAT IS IN THE HEART REFLECTED OUT.

Caveats: Students need to NOT be pressured into an economic mold—it destroys motivation , curiosity and love of learning (science shows that these are the basis for life-long mental resilience). People learn at their own pace and have individual processing modes. It is vital for our future to nurture instrinsic motivation in the next generation.

Why haven't education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning Initiative. Overhauling the educational paradigm means replacing the metaphor — the concept of the world and its inhabitants as machine-like entities — that has shaped the education system, as well as many other aspects of our culture.

 

Creating “Collaborative Learning Communities”

“It is essential to view learning as a total community responsibility,” he says, and to expect no short cuts. Children need to be integrated, fully contributing members of the broader community, so they can feel useful and valued. (It is not just the children who need this, he adds; healthy communities also need children.)

.

On a practical level, the most powerful lever for change, Abbott says, is people coming together to “rethink the role of community in the learning process,” agreeing how to divide up responsibilities among professional teachers and other community members, and then launching small pilot projects that are true to their new vision. These efforts will build on each other, he says, and large-scale change will follow.

In the report ‘New Vision for Education: Fostering Social and Emotional Learning through Technology', the World Economic Forum explores how "character qualities" such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking will equip students to succeed in the swiftly evolving digital economy.

To thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. They must be adept at collaboration, communication and problem-solving, which are some of the skills developed through social and emotional learning (SEL).

In 2015, the World Economic Forum (WEF) published the report New Vision for Education: Unlocking the Potential of Technology that focused on the pressing issue of the 21st-century skills gap and ways to address it through technology. In that report, WEF defined a set of 16 crucial proficiencies for education. Of those skills, 10 were labelled either “competencies” or “character qualities”. Competencies are the means by which students approach complex challenges; they include collaboration, communication and critical thinking and problem-solving. Character qualities are the ways in which students approach their changing environment; they include curiosity, adaptability and social and cultural awareness.

What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. Jackie GERSTEIN:  Me encanta la planificación de lecciones a partir de cero. Acabo de recibir un trabajo enseñando unidades de tecnología para un campamento de verano para estudiantes de primaria. Puedo diseñar y enseñar lo que quiera - la planificación de un tema diferente cada semana. Algunos de los temas que estoy planificación son: Ampliar y mostrando sus intereses personales a través de blogs, fotos y vídeos; Codificación y creación de juegos en línea; Trabajos manuales y Hacer - Robótica simples; Hackear la computadora portátil; y creación de Comics en línea, periódicos y revistas. He comenzado el proceso de planificación de estas clases a través de la reflexión sobre lo que las lecciones se verá así.

Critical digital literacy is one of the essential required competencies for the 21st century educator. In an era of unprecedented personal publishing, infobesity (information obesity) becomes a real issue. Teachers need to be able to critically  assess and evaluate the materials and knowledge they come across. This could be done through adopting a critical thinking lens to filter things that could otherwise unconsciously affect one's stance and interpretation of  a given meaning.

Juliet Hinrichsen and Antony Coombs from University of Greenwich developed this excellent framework to help you understand the concept of critical digital literacy. This framework is made up of 5 dimensions:

About five years ago, I worked with a large suburban school on developing awareness and teaching/learning skill sets in the area of critical literacy. The nuances of digital and even print text within structure and conventions suggests meaning that extends far beyond the alphabetic word. This framework would have been a helpful tool to ground discussion and build understanding.

The face of educational instruction is changing once again.  The relaxed manner in which these notes are representing important content is fabulous.  A cirle is almost complete - as a child this sort of doodling in class was stopped and a punishable offense!  Yet so many tutors, educators, and trainers are idealists and visualise while learning and observing the world around them.  It is great to see that this representation of learning is on a comeback of acceptance.

We use the words transparency and accountability as though they make a difference. They are external processes which have to be replaced by conversation and responsibility. We have to be willing to sit and listen to each other, adults and students, and respond responsibly.
