Are these animals too 'ugly' to be saved?

Are these animals too 'ugly' to be saved? | Organic Pathos | Scoop.it
We're used to being asked to help save photogenic pandas, but are there animals whose strange appearance hinders conservation?

Creatures that achieve world fame for being under threat - the panda, the mountain gorilla, the tiger - tend to be conventionally aesthetically pleasing, even cute.

But the scientists who study the planet's rarest beasts say that many of the most precious and threatened creatures have physical characteristics that, although perhaps not adorable in the most orthodox sense, make them truly unique.

A project run by the Zoological Society for London (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered) is trying to raise awareness of these less appreciated creatures.

Saturday Afternoon Music: Louise Golbey - Station Sessions - 'The Sea And Me'

I first heard Louise @ the Station Sessions and tonight she will be @ Kensington Roof Gardens, in what promises to be a glowing night, in this spectacular venue. In danger of waxing lyrical here..there's the pinks of Richard Branson's flamingoes and the soul-blues of Louise ..I cannot think of a better combination!

Supermarket...or Restaurant?

Supermarket...or Restaurant? | Organic Pathos | Scoop.it

It wasn’t too long ago that people went to supermarkets just for groceries or maybe that precooked rotisserie chicken. These days there are many supermarkets with highly developed foodservice programs that take aim at customers looking for a place to dine out or pick up a meal on the go. Supermarkets are now featuring everything from in-store sushi bars, wood-fired pizza ovens and hand-scooped gelato stations, to wine bars and neighborhood diners. Some stores even have branded concepts within them, such as Wolfgang Puck Express, which are located in Gelson’s stores.

To compete even further with restaurants for customer dollars, supermarkets are beginning to implement similar services and promotions that are commonly seen in restaurants, such as offering free Wi-Fi, indoor and indoor/outdoor café-style seating areas, wine tastings, cooking classes/demos and interactive websites that feature blogs, recipes, videos and more.....

Sunday's Song: Harry Oakwood - Empty Chair

"Harry Oakwood had a dream. He would build a band. A band of brothers who would serve him and act under his name. Harry Oakwood (Millionaire) are that band."

I heard these guys @ Station Sessions on Thursday..love their energy, the way they play together in harmony with one another ....this will brighten up the wet start to Sunday! A catchy sort of sad and sober song, reflecting on the need to evaluate your life...before it's too late ..should be depressing but isn't!

I heard these guys @ Station Sessions last October. I love their energy. They chime so well with one another.

This is a catchy yet sober song, reflecting on the need to evaluate your life...before it's too late ..should be depressing but isn't! Give it a listen.

Catch them live @ St Stephen's Church, Shepherd's Bush on 20 March. See you there!

The 5 Most Innovative Takes On Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"

The 5 Most Innovative Takes On Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" | Organic Pathos | Scoop.it
If you've never intentionally listened to jazz or never quite understood how to tap your foot to a 5/4 time signature, you still know Dave Brubeck's "Take Five."

If you've never intentionally listened to jazz or never quite understood how to tap your foot to a 5/4 time signature, you still know Dave Brubeck's "Take Five." The man brought odd time signatures to elevators and medical professionals' waiting rooms everywhere. But he also inspired a diverse array of artists who covered his classic. Here are some of the most notable.

A new box set captures an assortment of live recordings, some of them previously unreleased, made by bands led by bassist and composerCharles Mingus in 1964-1965. It's a monumental example of how a jazz great dedicated his life to his art.
