klawncare1239's insight:

I'm all in favor when they work.  Unfortunately, so many of these products have proven useless when I've purchased them.  Don't just buy these products because they "sound good".  Research them and pay attention to the reviews.  Make sure you're purchasing products that will ACTUALLY do the job you're buying them to do (and for a price that is reasonable enough to make it worthwhile).

Lawmakers Could Cause Dairy Prices to Double

Lawmakers Could Cause Dairy Prices to Double | Organic Gardening, Farming, Lawncare, Landscaping & Eating :) | Scoop.it
Among the many considerations to avoiding the dreaded "fiscal cliff" is a 1949 farm law that could drive up the cost of milk to more than double its current prices.
klawncare1239's insight:

As unfortunate as this would be, the truth is, this subsidy should not exist.  Government should not be involved in propping up any industry, farming or otherwise.  If the industry is valid and useful, consumers will "prop it up" by way of purchasing from that industry.  I feel bad for those who will feel the initial sting (both consumers AND farmers), but, at least they will begin to realize the full effect of the TRUE inflation we're facing as a nation.

Over the first 140 years since this nation's founding, there was virtually ZERO inflation.  Since the Federal Reserve was instituted in the early 1900's, inflaation has raised the cost of goods about 800%, and much of that has been since gold was removed as a backing for the dollar.

Subsidies and other "supports" to various industries have hidden much of this inflation from consumers and producers alike.  It's high time that these government "helps" were disoolved so that the American people can begin to see the negative results of government intervention in ANY aspect of our lives, including the economy.

UK Ecologist: 'Wind Farms Driving Birds, Bats to Extinction' | Wind | ReWire | KCET | Organic Gardening, Farming, Lawncare, Landscaping & Eating :) | Scoop.it
A report released just before New Years found that many wind turbines' effective lifespans are much shorter than expected.
klawncare1239's insight:

Not sure if this is a bit overly dramatic, but it does serve to illustrate a point.  Maybe in our rush to be more "green" we should consider the ancilary effects of such efforts beforehand.  Ethanol is another perfect example.

I'm all for moving toward more sustainable farming and energy production methods, but they have to be efficient, effective and well thought out.  These "knee jerk" reactions are not solving the problems - typically they are simply creating new ones.

Debunking 'Green Living': Combatting Climate Change Requires Lifestyle Changes, Not Organic Products

Debunking 'Green Living': Combatting Climate Change Requires Lifestyle Changes, Not Organic Products | Organic Gardening, Farming, Lawncare, Landscaping & Eating :) | Scoop.it
Debunking 'Green Living': Combatting Climate Change Requires Lifestyle Changes, Not Organic Products (RT @GOOD: Debunking 'green living': Combatting climate change requires lifestyle changes, not organic products http://t.co/KjAUZyQP)...
klawncare1239's insight:

Sorry, but, both approaches are wrong if they are trying to combat "climate change", since whatever climate change there is, is not caused by man (at least not the vast majorityof it).

If you actually look at the climate curve for MORE than the last couple hundred years, you see that the earth's temperature has been much higher AND much colder at numerous times in the earth's history than it has been over the past couple hundred years.

Climate fluctuations are a NORMAL part of the process, not a man caused "disaster".  Moreover, for years everyone was screeming about global warming.  Now, they don't say that.  They say "climate change".  Why?  Because for the past 15 years the earth's temp has been cooling.

So, if it was so bad for the earth's temperature to be rising and we had to be so concerned about it.  Why, now that the trend has reversed itself, should we now be so concerned about the cooling?  Shouldn't we be happy that we averted the "global warming disaster" that was so dangerous?

The whole thing is ridiculous.  I am a firm believer in conserving our resources when it makes sense, using more natural products when they are effective enough to do the job and COST effective enough to make it economically feasible and making lifestyle changes that will help protect our environment (if they are not going to cause me to go back to living in the "dark ages").

My issue is with the virtual hysteria that has been cuased by individuals like Al Gore who stand to make BILLIONS of dollars in profit through "assisting" with the Cap and Trade process that will be instituted to combat the effects of global "climate change".

Look into it, people.  The ones screeming the loudest about this potential catastrophe are often those who stand to gain the most if they can convince you that this imaginary demon is real.

Author, speaker, professor and all-around gardening trend-watcher Allan Armitage thinks so. He believes more and more of tomorrow's "gardens" will be in pots, hanging baskets and planters on the deck, patio and balcony.
klawncare1239's insight:

This is definitely something to pay attention to.  Anything we can learn about small container gardening will be of value as there are so many who live in places where there just isn't much room for a traditional garden.
