Fruit or Vegetable?

A fruit is the part of the plant that develops from a flower, It's also the section of the plant that contains the seeds. The other parts are considered vegetables, which include the stems, leaves and roots — and even the flower bud.

Fruit or Vegetable?

Nutritionally, fruits and vegetables are similar, they're generally lower in calories and fat, but higher in fiber. Fruits and vegetables also contain health-enhancing plant compounds such as antioxidants. And they're loaded with vitamins and minerals.
Vegetables are less sweet or more savory, while fruits, on the other hand are more sweet and tart. Both fruits and vegetables can be made into juice for a refreshing beverage. Some fruits are also "grains", "nuts" and "seeds".
The following are technically fruits: avocado, beans, pea pods, corn kernels, cucumbers, grains, nuts, olives peppers, pumpkin, squash, sunflower seeds and tomatoes. Vegetables include celery (stem), lettuce (leaves), cauliflower and broccoli (buds), and beets, carrots and potatoes (roots).

Study: Organic Produce Higher in Antioxidants

Study: Organic Produce Higher in Antioxidants | Organic Fruit for Health | Scoop.it

Eating organic food will give you 20 to 40 percent more antioxidants, say researchers of the British Journal of Nutrition.

The study also stated, conventionally grown foods are three to four times more likely to contain pesticide residues, and cadmium, a toxic heavy metal contaminant.

A review of 343 studies comparing nutrient and pesticide levels in conventionally and organically grown fruits, vegetables and seeds.

The authors of the new research study said that their finding is more reliable than prior studies, because they analyzed more studies and used more sophisticated means of analysis.

Antioxidants are thought to prevent or delay some types of cell damage, and therefore theoretically can improve health and slow aging.

The researchers said, organic foods have 60 percent more antioxidants than their conventionally grown version. In terms only of antioxidant intake, that’s the equivalent of eating an additional one or two servings of produce per day, the researchers said.

Organic plants were found to be lower in protein and amino acids than conventionally grown foods. “The nutritional significance/relevance of slightly lower protein and amino acid concentrations in organic crops to human health is likely to be low, as European and North American diets typically provide sufficient or even excessive amounts of proteins and essential amino acids,” the researchers wrote.

The researchers offered two theories for why organic foods might be higher in antioxidants.

First, it’s thought that plants produce the chemicals that form antioxidants in response to environmental stress, such as pests, disease and a relative lack of soil nutrients. Because conventionally grown foods are more shielded from these sources of stress, through pesticides and other growing practices, they don’t have as great an impetus to produce antioxidants, this theory goes.

Second, conventional farming uses fertilizer with a much higher nitrogen content, which leads to plants producing fewer antioxidants, the researchers speculated.

While the finding concerning antioxidants is potentially significant, it’s worth bearing in mind that the average American gets three servings of fruits and vegetables per day; the daily recommendation is five to 13 servings. If you’re not yet meeting the five-per-day recommended minimum, most nutritionists would agree the first step is upping your intake rather than focusing on how the produce is grown

Is organic worth the extra cost?
julia garte's insight:

Organic fruits and vegetables are usually more expensive than conventionally grown produce. People claim that there aren't significant health benefits in organic over conventional produce.      An analysis by the British Journal of Nutrition indicates that people who choose organic get 20 to 40 percent more antioxidants without eating more.

Whatever you choose, don't cut back on eating fruits and vegetables. People who eat the most produce -- whether it is organic or not -- have the lowest disease risks than those who eat the least produce.

The U.S. Potato Board (USPB) classifies potatoes as the largest and most affordable source of potassium of any vegetable or fruit on its consumer site, www.potatogoodness.com.

The site also refers to potatoes as the highest for potassium content among the top 20 most frequently consumed raw vegetables and fruits.

“Although often overlooked, the importance of this mineral in our diets is quite significant,” says Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association Executive Director Duane Maatz. “Research suggests potassium aids in muscle contraction, including the heart, and assists with nerve stimulation."

“Studies show potatoes contain more potassium than other foods like bananas, oranges and mushrooms, which are typically known for their potassium content,” Maatz says. “Unfortunately, very few Americans are getting adequate amounts of this electrolyte on a daily basis.”

'Organic fruit and veg REALLY IS good for your health'

Organic fruit and veg REALLY IS good for your health'

Organic fruit and vegetables contain higher levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants than conventional fresh produce, according to the Newcastle University team, which was led by Professor Carlo Leifert. They concluded that switching to a diet of organic fruit, vegetables and cereals – or food made from them – would provide a significant increase in the consumption of antioxidants.

The higher levels of the antioxidants, are recognized as being   beneficial in preventing cancer. This is equivalent to eating up to two extra portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Reduced levels of pesticides on organic food were also a quarter of those on conventional produce

Professor Leifert said: ‘This study demonstrates that choosing food produced according to organic standards can lead to increased intake of desirable antioxidants

The Soil Association, which supports British organic farmers and sets standards for the industry, welcomed the research.

Its chief executive, Helen Browning, said: ‘The crucially important thing about this research is that it shatters the myth that how we farm does not affect the quality of the food. In other countries there has long been much higher levels of acceptance of the benefits of organic food: we hope these findings will bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe when it comes to attitudes to organic food and support for organic farming.’

Responsibility for policy on organic farming was shifted from the Food Standards Agency to Public Health England (PHE) by the Coalition Government. It argued it was important that the entire nation increases consumption of fruit and vegetables.

Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at PHE, said: ‘PHE welcome this addition to the evidence base but we cannot assess the potential impact of organic foods on public health from this study alone.

‘Ultimately we all need to eat more fruit and vegetables regardless of whether they are organic. Currently the population is eating on average 4.1 portions of fruit and vegetables per day and we need to increase this to a minimum of five a day.’

The peer-reviewed study was funded by the European Union and organic farming charity the Sheepdrove Trust, and is due to be published in the British Journal of Nutrition next week.Source: dailymail.co.uk
