Following passage of legislation to allow HIV positive individuals to become organ donors in the United States, the next step has involved guidelines being developed to allow this to become a clinical reality.


Now the John Hopkins hospital has said that it would become the first in the nation to perform kidney and liver transplants between H.I.V.-positive donors and H.I.V.-positive patients. This is under a strict research protocol and will require that selection criteria are applied both to the organ donors as well as the transplant recipients.

The Proceed II International Heart Transplant Trial Results are being Revealed at the ISHLT 34th meeting.

 

Preliminary outcome data are favorable for heart transplant outcomes where donor hearts were maintained on the TransMedics Organ Care System device compared to being placed into conventional cold storage prior to transplantation.
