This is the first proof that this particular type of transplant procedure can lead to the spread of specific food allergies from the donor to the recipient. The fact that the allergy developed in the recipient reflects transmission of the cells responsible for the immune response that underpins the particular allergy in question.

Similar cases have been reported on occasion in liver transplant recipients.

Two adult males,Darren Hughes and Robert 'Jim' Stuart died less than three weeks after what they believed would be life-saving kidney transplant surgery.

 

Preliminary investigations have determined that the donor organs may have been harboring a rare form of parasite and that this parasite then led to severe illness in each of the two men.

The results of several investigations are now awaited. As outlined in the online report this is an extremely rare infection and has previously only been described in a small number of cases.
