Re-conditioning lungs for transplant UK trial of ex-vivo lung preservation | Organ Donation & Transplant Matters Resources |

News out of the United Kingdom (UK) this week is that UK transplant centres are set to trial a technique which re-conditions lungs retrieved from organ donors to improve the lungs ability to function.

Although initially reported as "lung washing" this is actually ex-vivo lung preservation. Circulating oxygen and a balanced preservation fluid through the lungs following the surgical retrieval may help improve their condition. "Reconditioned lungs" may then be able to be transplanted into recipients such as the woman featured in this news release.
