This is one of at least three ex-vivo liver preservation devices now in trial around the world. The outcome data are awaited with interest noting that the benefits of ex-vivo liver preservation will need to be clear for this type of technology to be incorporated into routine practice.

UCLA performs first 'breathing lung' transplant in United States - EurekAlert (press release)

The first lung transplant has been performed in the United States where the TransMedics organ preservation device was utilised.  The procedure occurred at the University of California Los Angeles and has been termed a 'breathing lung' transplant  due to the manner in which organ preservation is achieved.

Traditionally, all donor organs are placed in a cool-box and surrounded by ice to prevent them deteriorating on their journey between hospitals.

 

However new technology in the form of transportable machines is

leading to changes in how some organs are maintained following their removal from the donor.

 

This report focuses on the preliminary experience with the use of normothermic machine preservation in the Harefield heart transplant programme in the United Kingdom
