The Sri Lankan government last week suspended all kidney transplants for foreigners, after Indian police said they were investigating alleged organ sales.

 

This has come about following reports of organ trading involving individuals who then traveled from India to Sri Lanka in order to undergo the transplant surgery.

The theft of a human leg from a vehicle occurred early this last week as employees of nonprofit organization OneLegacy were eating at The Original Pantry Cafe in Los Angeles.

 

The theft is now being investigated by authorities as it is illegal to steal human body parts in Western Countries. For more on the story click on the banner headline.

This is just one of a number of news reports out of Germany in recent months. Now German medical authorities are calling for an extensive overhaul of the country's organ transplant programme after transplant centres across Germany were placed under criminal investigation for what appears to be mis-allocation of organs.

These are the kind of headlines that lead to a loss of public confidence in organ donation. Now everything possible needs to be done within Germany to restore the community's faith in the organ donation system. It is evident from the statements being in all of these articles, that this whole issue needs to be seriously addressed and ultimately changes in practice occur.

News from the United States that the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) has suspended its live donor kidney transplant program whilst an investigation is carried out into the recent death of a live donor following surgery.  

 

UCSF’s suspension of its living donor program for kidney transplants this week after the death of a donor highlights a rare but potential complication for a procedure that’s typically an altruistic gift by a friend or family member to a patient who requires a kidney transplant.

The German Medical Association is investigating an incident where surgeons began to operate on a north German man who was not strictly brain dead.

 

The specifics of the case are not known however it has been confirmed that an investigation will now be undertaken for a case where concerns have been expressed around the sequence of events during organ retrieval surgery.

It is essential that the certification of brain death follows established protocols and standards to prevent unintended consequences.
